Oswaldo Brenes Álvarez (born August 5, 1942 in Liberia , Costa Rica , † February 11, 2013 ) was Bishop of Ciudad Quesada .

Life

Oswaldo Álvarez Brenes studied from 1961 to 1966 in the seminary of Paso Ancho and received on 18 December 1966, the sacrament of Holy Orders . He was pastorally active in the diocese of Tilarán-Liberia . In 1991/92 he completed a postgraduate course in theology at the Universidad Nacional de Costa Rica in Heredia and a degree in religious education at the Universidad Católica de Costa Rica . From 1994 to 2006 he taught at the Major Seminary of San José and was its vice-rector (1997–2000) and study rector (2001–2003) and rector from 2003 to 2006. In 2007 he became vicar in the parish of Our Lady of the Angels in Santa Cruz, Guanacaste, and staff in the Department of Vocations in the Diocese. In 2008 he became Vicar General of the Diocese of Tilarán.

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on March 19, 2008 Bishop of Ciudad Quesada. The Apostolic Nuncio in Costa Rica, Archbishop Osvaldo Padilla , donated him episcopal ordination on May 24 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of San José de Costa Rica , Hugo Barrantes Ureña , and the Bishop of Cartago , José Francisco Ulloa Rojas .

After the 70-year-old's health deteriorated dramatically from September 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. submitted his request to resign due to illness on December 31, 2012.
