Oswego is a small town in Oswego County in the US state of New York and is also its county seat . Oswego is located directly on Lake Ontario , which is why it calls itself "The Port City of Central New York". The city has 18,142 inhabitants according to the 2010 census.
The State University of New York at Oswego is outside the actual city limits in the west. Neighboring towns are Oswego Town , Minetto and Scriba .
history
The history of Oswego goes back to the 17th century. The explorer Samuel de Champlain is named as the first European to explore the area. The British founded Fort Oswego there in 1722 , a reinforced trading post. In 1755, Fort Ontario was built on the other side of the river , today one of the city's sights. During the French and Indian War (1754–1763), Fort Oswego was briefly occupied by the French.
In 1796, the British withdrew from Fort Oswego and settlers from the east coast and eastern New York began to settle in the area. During the British-American War , British forces briefly occupied Fort Ontario. The city was officially founded in 1848. The upswing at that time was mainly due to the existence of the Oswego Canal, a connection between the Erie Canal and Lake Ontario . The merchants resident in the city made wealth by trading in flour, wheat, wood, iron, salt and corn starch . Due to the port and the fact that the place was a railway junction for a long time, the development of Oswego into a modern city was also greatly favored in the following decades.

According to the United States Census Bureau , Oswego has an area of 29.1 km², of which 19.8 km² is land and 9.2 km² is water.
The city is located on the southeastern bank of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the Oswego River . Oswego is 56 km north (rather northwest) of Syracuse and 110 km east of Rochester on the south bank of Lake Ontario .
The New York State Route 481 runs from northwest to southeast of Oswego to the nearest town of Fulton and ends in North Syracuse at the leading Syracuse to Interstate 81 . The New York State Route 104 runs east-west from Oswego to Rochester.
Oswego is one of the snowiest cities in America . In some winters there is a total snow depth of 7.62 m. The sometimes extreme snowfall, for example, in 1995 and 2007 led to the school and university being shut down for several days.

According to the last official census , the city has 17,954 inhabitants, who are distributed among 7,338 households. The population density is thus 905 people per square kilometer. Most of the population (95.33 percent) are white; Hispanics and Latinos (2.8 percent), African-Americans (1.04 percent), Asians (0.82 percent) and Native Americans (0.33), along with members of other or different ethnic origins (1.07 and 1 , 42 percent) the absolute minority.

The elected city administration of Oswegos consists of the mayor and seven Aldermen , each of which is determined by one of the seven municipal electoral districts . Furthermore, the city maintains full-time employees in the usual city departments such as the police, waterworks, garbage disposal and others.
