The "Basic Income Grant" project in Omitara and Otjivero

In 2008 and 2009 Omitara and Otjivero were the location of the pilot project for an unconditional basic income in Namibia - Basic Income Grant Namibia (BIGNam) . Every person below the retirement age of 60 received 100 Namibia dollars per month (pensioners in Namibia receive 450 N $).

The Coalition for an Unconditional Basic Income in Namibia (English: Basic Income Grant Coalition ) was formed by Namibian workers' organizations and church organizations.

A study evaluating the project found that poverty-related crime, child malnutrition and lack of children in school have declined since the start of the project.

The project was discontinued in December 2009. However, after the final payment was made, a bridging allowance of N $ 80 per month was introduced to prevent the residents from falling back into poverty.

Controversy over the BIG project

Recently the view has been expressed that the project has not been adequately documented and has actually failed. This view was vehemently contradicted by those involved in the project.
