The Otterbach is a 7 km long, approximately eastward running brook on the Haller level in the northeast of Baden-Württemberg , mostly in the urban area of Schwäbisch Hall , which a little before the hamlet of Oberscheffach in the small town of Ilshofen also in the district of Schwäbisch Hall from the left into the lower Bühler flows out.

geography

course

The Otterbach rises at about 405  m above sea level. NHN on the L 2218, a little east of the junction of the K 2658 in the direction of Schwäbisch Hall - Eltershofen , on a hill of the intensively arable Haller level. At the very beginning a mere rivulet accompanying the field path, the stream flows its first 2 km to the southeast towards Altenhausen , passes the Schwäbisch Hall-Weckrieden landing site in the northeast and runs in a damp lowland, once a swamp, before Altenhausen.

At the hamlet of Altenhausen, which is on his right, he permanently turns to the east, crosses under the Altenhausen – Veinau road that runs on the embankment of a former lake and then reaches the outskirts of the village of Tüngental . Previously a straightened body of water that was barely deepened in a very shallow basin, the Otterbach now forms meadow meanders for the first time, then takes up the Lohwiesenbach flowing in from the north-west and, after crossing this only larger settlement on its banks, noticeably digs itself into the stony subsoil here a. Down the stream at the Tüngentals sewage treatment plant, the Rössbach reaches it from the south, which drains the arable land between the Hessental industrial area and the Hasenbühl forest in the south of Tüngental on the rise to the Keuperberge and Matheshörlebach in the southeast.

Then the stream enters a narrow, wooded gorge, the so-called Otterbachklinge , in which it flows down over rock banks for about a third of its length and digs for about two thirds of its gradient. After about a third of the gorge stretch, its longest tributary flows into it from the left, the Rotbach , which has its origin in the northwestern hamlet of Ramsbach; on its last strong half kilometer also a Waldklingenbach, this tributary plunges down a man-sized waterfall a few steps before the mouth.

At the exit of the Otterbachklinge the brook still flows under a bridge of the K 2665 Matheshörlebach-Großaltdorf and then flows southwest of the Talweiler Ilshofen- Oberscheffach into the wide floodplain at 295  m above sea level. NHN after about 7.4 km from left and west into the lower Bühler.

Catchment area

The Otterbach drains 15.2 km² of the western part of the Haller level , which is a sub- natural area of the Hohenloher and Haller level and lies between Kocher in the west, Bühler in the east and Limpurger mountains in the south, eastwards to the Bühler. The village of Tüngental lies in the middle of its catchment area , its extreme points are approximate

The highest point in the catchment area is at its southern tip in the Hasenbühl on the rise to the Limpurger Mountains, where the terrain level at the Schützenhaus in Hasenbühl under a prehistoric burial mound is about 436  m above sea level. Reached NHN . The Bühlerzimmer water tower on the northern tip is a little lower at about 427  m above sea level. NHN .

In the southwest and west are the neighboring catchment areas of Waschbach bei Hessental and Wettbach bei Weckrieden , which flow to the Kocher. It is noticeable that they were only able to gain a smaller part of the width of the plateau between Kocher and Bühler, although they have a significantly deeper erosion base than the Otterbach, which flows into the Bühler far upstream. In the north-west and north, the Kocher tributary Diebach near Eltershofen and its tributary Ölklingenbach around Veinau became more prevalent. In the northeast and east, where the watershed runs little to the left of the Rotbach with a distance to the receiving Bühler of usually less than one kilometer, there are hardly any other Bühler tributaries apart from slope streams in between. In the south between Bühler and Hasenbühl, the Sulzdorf Schwarzenlachenbach , which also drains east to the Bühler, competes with its tributaries, with a tiny stream leading to the Bühler at Jagstrot in between .

Agriculture predominates in the catchment area of the Otterbach. The upper reaches of the waters are regularly in flat, moist hollows in which grassland defines the picture, as well as on the northern edge of the Hasenbühl and on the airfield in the west. The little forest stands on some small knolls, on the hillside of the Hasenbühl and in the two mentioned blades.

A projection of the community area of Ilshofen with an area of less than 10 ha protrudes about 400 m from the mouth up into the lower Otterbachklinge; in the north near the Bühlerzimmerner water tower, less than 20 hectares belong to the community of Braunsbach from the side of the hilltop that drains to the Otterbach . The entire rest of the catchment area belongs to the city of Schwäbisch Hall .

geology

The largest part of the stream as well as the entire catchment area lies in the Unterkeuper (Lettenkeuper); This is partially covered by loess at higher altitudes , which offers agriculture very advantageous soils for arable farming. In the extreme south, the catchment area in Hasenbühl has a share in the lower ascent to the Limpurger Mountains , here Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ) is due. The Otterbach blade as well as the blade of the Rotbach lie in the Upper Muschelkalk .

Nature and protected areas

The Otterbach is a watercourse that has changed significantly before and in Tüngental, after which it is very natural, except for the local sewage treatment plant and in the estuary area. In its lower reaches blade and the lower left side of the blade Rotbachs rise up to four meters high rock above the waters.

Below Tüngental, the brook soon enters the Bühlertal nature reserve between Vellberg and Geislingen with side valleys and adjacent areas , which, in addition to the lower valley of the Otterbach, also includes the deep lower valley sections of Rössbach and Rotbach. It flows into the nature reserve Unteres Bühlertal, which is a narrow band around the Bühler .

history

The old dam used by the Altenhausen – Veinau connection road previously dammed a lake that belonged to the Altenhausen moated castle . Apart from a somewhat peculiar, but inconspicuous terrain profile in nature north of the Otterbach -lauf there, nothing can be seen of this.

In the upper Rotbach , the moated castle Ramsbach used to stand on the edge of the hamlet of the same name, of which nothing can be seen.

The Hällische Chronik mentions more details about this and about the formerly resident noble families .
