Otto Meffert

Otto Meffert (born December 19, 1879 in Warmbach , Taunus , † August 1, 1970 in Hanover ) was a German architect , urban planner and city planning officer .

Life

Meffert studied from around 1900 at the Kunstgewerbeschule Barmen-Elberfeld as well as at the Staatliche Baugewerkschule Frankfurt / Oder and was then employed for 8 years in the Barmen City Building Office, where he was in charge of the building management and drawing up development plans .

From 1912 Meffert worked as a city ​​architect in Hanover and was appointed municipal architect in 1923 . From 1924 he headed the department for urban expansion and from the following year 1925 he became the closest employee of the city planning officer Karl Elkart . From summer 1945 Meffert was initially acting, and from 1946 to August 1948 elected successor to Karl Elkart.

As city architect Otto Meffert organized now the (re) construction of about 48 percent destroyed city Hannover: In addition to clearing the debris and repairs began in 1947 with a longer-term planning, the individual parts of the still under the Nazis developed radical plan 1944 / 45 for the new construction of the city. This included relieving the inner city of traffic by means of road breakthroughs , widening of streets and a so-called " Leinerandstraße ", the loosening of the previously dense development and greater greening . However, these plans were revised as early as 1947/48 by an expert opinion by a working group at the Technical University led by Finsterwalder , Högg , Otto Fiederling and Ernst Zinsser . Meffert's successor Rudolf Hillebrecht , however, did not use these revised plans as the basis for further development planning.

Otto Meffert remained active on the Hanover building committee and as a consultant until 1952.

Honors

Otto Meffert was posthumously honored by the state capital Hanover by naming Meffertstrasse, which was laid out in 1984 in the Bothfeld district .
