Otto Clemens August von Claer (born November 23, 1827 in Bonn , † April 1, 1909 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Otto was the son of the Prussian domain councilor Franz Bernhard Wilhelm de Claer (1785-1853) and his wife Barbara Henriette Hubertine, born Pentecost (1803-1884).

Military career

Claer first studied law at the University of Bonn , where he was a member of the Corps Palatia , before he joined the Prussian Army in April 1849 as a one-year volunteer in the 4th Dragoon Regiment . He became second lieutenant in 1850 and rose to Rittmeister and squadron chief by March 1864 . In this position, Claer took part in the battles near Nachod , Skalitz , Schweinschädel and Königgrätz during the war against Austria in 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords , for his achievements .

After the end of the war, from April 11, 1867 to March 21, 1868, he was employed as an adjutant at the General Command of VI. Army Corps . Subsequently transferred to Dragoon Regiment No. 13 under this command , Claer was appointed Adjutant to the Chief of the Army General Staff Helmuth von Moltke on June 9, 1868 under position à la suite of the regiment . Promoted to major on November 13, 1868 , Claer took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . He took part in the battles at Gravelotte , Sedan and Mont Valérien as well as the siege of Paris and received both classes of the Iron Cross .

In the autumn of 1876 he was promoted to colonel and on April 4, 1882 appointed commandant of Magdeburg . In 1882 he became major general , in September 1887 lieutenant general and in spring 1889 he was transferred to the army officers.

On the occasion of the unveiling of the Moltke monument on Königsplatz in Berlin, the Emperor awarded him the Order of the Red Eagle First Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring.

family

Claer married Maria Magdalene Christiane Spitz (1834–1895) on April 17, 1855 in Bonn. She was the daughter of the court councilor and treasurer at the University of Bonn Joseph Andreas Spitz. The following children were born from the marriage:

  • Eberhard (1856–1945), Prussian infantry general
  • Josepha Barbara Marie Agnes (born February 25, 1859 in Lüben; † January 30, 1939 in Berlin)
  • Maria Klementine Alexandrine (born October 19, 1860 in Danzig; † August 16, 1889 in Stettin) ∞ Hans von Hopffgarten called Heidler, Prussian captain
  • Alexander Karl August (* June 11, 1862 in Gdansk), Prussian colonel a. D. , military attaché in Bucharest and Beijing
  • Waly Eleonore Josepha (born October 21, 1865 in Haynau)

Otto von Claer was buried at the side of his wife Maria Spitz in the Invalidenfriedhof Berlin . The grave was marked with a restitution stone after 1989 .
