In Afghanistan the 13th century plans Jalaluddin Khilji from the Khilji - dynasty , the throne of Delhi to conquer. Meanwhile travels Rajput - rulers Maharawal Ratan Singh to Sinhala to acquire rare pearls for his first wife Nagmati. Sinhala Princess Padmavati unwittingly injures Ratan Singh while he is hunting a deer. The two fall in love and get married.

Jalaluddin seizes Delhi's throne and allows his nephew Alauddin to fend off a Mongol invasion of Delhi. Alauddin succeeds in defeating the Mongols with a trick and undertakes an unauthorized attack on Devagiri. When he learns of Alauddin's ambition to take over his throne, Jalaluddin travels to Kara, where his nephew is also stationed. Jalaluddin arrives and hands the slave Malik Kafur over to Alauddin, who murders Jalaluddin and his guards, whereupon Alauddin declares himself Sultan of Delhi.

Padmavati travels with Ratan Singh to Mewar , where they are blessed by Singh's royal priest, Raghav Chetan. Chetan is caught watching Ratan and Padmavati kissing and is banished from the kingdom. He travels to Delhi and tells Khilji about Padmavati's beauty. Alauddin, who wants to own every precious thing in the world, invites the Rajputs to Delhi. When he learns of their refusal, he orders an attack on Chittor .

After many unsuccessful attempts to storm Chittor, Khilji feigns peace and is allowed to enter Chittor, and is up to see Padmavati. The Rajputs, knowing his intentions, let him live just because he is a guest. He gets to see Padmavati shortly after he insists.

In return, Alauddin offers Ratan Singh a visit where he is captured by Alauddin who requests to see Padmavati. After being insisted by the main queen, she agrees and travels to Delhi to meet Khilji. Meanwhile, Alaluddin's nephew tries to murder him. Alauddin is wounded but is defending himself. On the borders of sultanates, the Rajputs plan to ambush the Khilji soldiers the next morning during Namāz.

Padmavati frees Ratan with the help of Alaluddin's wife Mehrunisa. The Khilji soldiers who pray are alerted and attacked, but are ambushed by the Rajputs disguised as women. The Rajput attack is repulsed, with the ambush of Rajputs killed. In Chittor, Padmavati is praised for saving Ratan and is compared to a goddess .

Alauddin imprisons Mehrunisa for helping the Rajputs and marches to Chittor. He and Ratan duel - Ratan almost defeats Alauddin, but is dishonorably shot with arrows by Khilji's troops. The Khilji army succeeds in defeating the Rajputs and conquering Chittor. To avoid imprisonment, the Rajput women, led by Padmavati, commit the Jauhar (self-immolation).

Reviews

Padmaavat received mixed reviews. Critics praised the visual effects and Singh's portrayal of Khilji, but criticized her plot, execution, length, and allegiance to regressive patriarchal mores. Critics also disliked the portrayal of Khilji as the stereotypical evil Muslim king and Ratan Singh as the righteous Hindu king.
