The area is 1834 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Palwal . The district belongs to the wider metropolitan area of Delhi .

The district was established on August 15, 2008 and originated from parts of Faridabad .

The population was 1,042,708 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 25.76% and was therefore very high. The Haryanvi language, a dialect of Hindi, is common in the district .
