Paolo Barison (born June 23, 1936 in Vittorio Veneto , † April 17, 1979 in Andora ) was an Italian football player and coach . The player from AC Milan , from Sampdoria Genoa and AS Roma took part in the 1966 World Cup in England with the national team of his home country .

Career

Club career

Paolo Barison was born on June 23, 1936 in Vittorio Veneto, Northern Italy, in Veneto . He began his footballing career with the city club, before moving to what is probably the most successful club in the area, AC Venice , in 1954 . In Venice , the young attacker played for three years from 1954 to 1957 and made 68 games in the league during that time, in which he scored twenty goals. In his second season, Barison rose to Serie B with AC Venice and was able to hold onto fifth place there in 1956/57. With eleven goals, Paolo Barison made a decisive contribution to the good result of his team. After the season he left AC Venice and signed a contract in Genoa in Serie A . Barison also played for the CFC for three years and made a total of 71 league appearances with thirty goals. After constant performances in the middle of the table were achieved in the first two years, the 1959/60 season was desolate for CFC Genoa and Paolo Barison. With only 18 points, he had to start the second division as bottom of the table.

Then Paolo Barison was signed by AC Milan , who finished third in Serie A last year. Barison played for Milan again for three years. However, here he was not in the kind and meadow supporting regular players as in Genoa , so that only 47 appearances in the league are to book, in which fourteen hits jumped out. In his first season at AC Milan, Paolo Barison finished third in Serie A with his employer. The 1961/62 season then went even better for Nereo Rocco's team . In Serie A, first place was taken five points ahead of local rivals Inter Milan , which meant Milan’s first championship in three years. Through this success one was eligible to start for the European Cup of National Champions 1962/63 . There, after successes over Union Luxemburg , Ipswich Town , Galatasaray Istanbul and FC Dundee , AC Milan advanced into the final, where the great Benfica Lisbon waited for Eusébio as opponents . With two goals from José Altafini , Milan turned the game around, won 2-1 and won the first international title in the club's history. However, Paolo Barison was not used in the final.

After this successful season, Paolo Barison changed employers again and joined Sampdoria Genoa . With Sampdoria, he barely prevented relegation to Serie B for two years in a row. In 1965 he went after 57 league games and nineteen goals for Samp to the capital club AS Roma , where he was on the pitch until 1967. However, the Roma only found themselves in the middle of the league at that time, so that no great successes were recorded. Paolo Barison made a total of 62 league games for AS Roma and scored thirteen goals. From 1967 he was under contract with SSC Napoli , where he made 54 games in the following three years. His goal rate decreased noticeably with just seven goals during this time. In his first season at the Stadio San Paolo , Barison was runner-up with SSC Napoli behind AC Milan. However, this success could not be repeated in the following and only placements in the upper midfield of Serie A were achieved in the other two seasons.

The now 34-year-old Paolo Barison moved in the summer of 1970 after three years in Naples to Ternana Calcio in Serie B. There he played for a year and scored ten goals in 31 league games, his team was twelfth in the second division. He spent the 1971/72 season at Bellaria Igea Marina , the half-year later at Toronto Blizzard in the North American Soccer League . From 1973 to 1974 Paolo Barison's long career ended with the lower-class club Levante Genoa. In 1974 he ended his career at the age of 38.

Barison later became a football coach. In 1976 he briefly coached the AC Milan team, but was soon replaced by Giovanni Trapattoni . 1977 to 1978 he was also responsible for Pro Patria Calcio .

National team

Between 1959 and 1966 Paolo Barison was used in nine international matches for the Italian national soccer team . He scored six goals. He made his debut in the national team on February 28, 1959 in Rome in a 1-1 draw against Spain . Then he had to wait until 1965 for his second assignment. In the third international match, Barison scored three times in a 6-1 win over Poland as part of qualifying for the 1966 World Cup in England . A year later, the striker was nominated for this by coach Edmondo Fabbri and used twice during the tournament. The World Cup on the British Isles was disappointing for the Italians, however, as the end came after the preliminary round , as had already happened four years earlier in Chile . After a 2-0 win over Chile and two defeats against the Soviet Union and World Cup newcomer North Korea , the two-time world champion had to say goodbye early. Paolo Barison completed the games against Chile and North Korea. He scored his only World Cup goal against the South Americans by scoring the decisive 2-0 in the 88th minute. After he was not used against the Soviet Union, Paolo Barison made his last international match in the final group game against North Korea in the sensational 0-1 bankruptcy.

death

Paolo Barison died on April 17, 1979 as a result of a car accident. On the Autostrada A10 was Fiat 130 by Luigi Radice , also a football coach and master coach of AC Turin , made of parts of a verunglückenden car carrier and thrown against the guardrail. While Radice was seriously injured, Paolo Barison, who was in the car, did not survive the accident. The 42-year-old died a little later in Andora hospital .
