Paolo Brenner (2013)

Paolo Brenner (born May 21, 1966 in Höchstädt an der Donau ) is a German specialist and professor for cardiac surgery at the Cardiac Surgery Clinic at the Großhadern Clinic of the LMU Munich . He is known for his work in the field of xenotransplantation , the further development of artificial hearts , extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and lung transplantation .

Life

Even as a teenager, Brenner became involved as a founding member of the German Society for Cosmology (DGK), was editor and co-editor of the Zeitschrift für Kosmologie from 1990 to 2007, in which he was driven by a 95-page physical work (1985) on the subject of the life story of Fixed stars and a youth research work on black holes 1986 published numerous own publications and overviews on cosmological topics.

Brenner did his Abitur in 1985 in Donauwörth and studied medicine at the LMU Munich from 1986 to 1993. During his medical studies he received a scholarship from the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and was the scholarship spokesperson for the foundation in Munich for several years. After completing his medical training, he worked as an intern in the cardiac surgery clinic / Klinikum Großhadern in Bruno Reichart's team from 1993 . In 1996 and 1997, Brenner narrowly dropped out of the last 20 applicants for a cosmonaut training program in Star City ( Swjosdny Gorodok ) in Russia in a national (15,000 applicants) and international (150,000 applicants) final selection and is now a member of the Association for the Promotion of Space Travel . From 1995 to 1997 he worked as a scientific assistant at the Cardiac Surgery Clinic and Polyclinic, Großhadern Clinic of the LMU Munich and was approved as a study director for clinical, pharmacological studies. In 1995 he was awarded a magna cum laude Dr. med. PhD. His dissertation topic was: Effect of different peptides on the sympathetic system of Brown Norway rats before and after inhibition of the conversion enzyme . The dissertation was instrumental in the development of the drug Ramipril . In 1997 he received a habilitation grant from the Bavarian Research Foundation for the project development of genetic engineering and mechanical processes for the implementation of xenogenic transplantation of pig organs at the Institute for Surgical Research. As part of this project, he carried out various xenoperfusion and transplanation test series of landrace and transgenic pig hearts. In 1999, Brenner moved to the Cardiac Clinic at the Augustinum as a scientific assistant at the LMU Cardiac Surgery Clinic in Bruno Reichart's team . In 2003 he completed his specialist training in cardiac surgery. He continued to work on the xenotransplant follow-up project Production of multi-transgenic pigs and the development of immunomodulatory strategies for clinical xenotransplantation . In the same year he moved to the Grosshadern Clinic of the LMU as a surgeon within the Cardiac Surgery Clinic. 2004 followed the completion of habilitation with the teaching qualification for the subject cardiac surgery with the Habilitation Topic: Influence of immunoadsorption on xenogeneic rejection mechanisms in perfusion and in xenotransplantation of Landrace and hDAF transgenic pig hearts in primates , which was written down in a 1450-page work. In 2004 he was appointed private lecturer and at the same time senior physician at the cardiac surgery clinic, in 2006 senior physician at the cardiac surgery clinic and member of the Munich Lung Transplant Group (ex- and implantation). In 2011, Brenner was appointed adjunct professor at LMU and in 2012 promoted to the rank of Academic Director as a civil servant.

Paolo Brenner has been a founding member and current member of the foundation board of the Christian Development Service Foundation since 1992, together with Susanne Pechel, and worked for Mother Teresa in 1997 in Calcutta .

Scientific contribution

Since 1993, Mr. Brenner has dealt with issues of thoracic organ transplantation (from 2004 as transplant surgeon of the heart and lungs ), since 2006 as a member of the Munich Lung Transplant Group and since 2000 as explorer of the German Foundation for Organ Transplantation (DSO). He was already active as a junior operator for the then Baxter Novacor company for the portable artificial heart system Novacor and is most recently researching the development of miniaturized " valve turbine pumps" as a proctor for JarvikHeart in cooperation with Robert Jarvik . With the support of the Bavarian Research Foundation , the specialist in cardiac surgery and his research team have been working with his research team since 1997 on the xenogenic transmission of multitransgenic pig hearts as a future organ replacement in humans, from 2004 within the framework of the transregional research group FOR 535 of the DFG and from 2012 as PI for the xenogenic area Heart transplantation in the Transregio Collaborative Research Center 127 (SFB127) with the speaker Bruno Reichart at the Walter Brendel Center for Surgical Research.

Cardiac xenotransplantation (from pig to human), on which Brenner and Reichart have been researching since 1997, has already reached the preclinical stage despite the higher immunological complexity due to pre-existing and newly formed antibodies in whole organs. In a patented combination (EP 1181034 B1, EP 1980263A1, US 8435520 B2) of transgenic organ / cells and immune adsorption (filtering out antibodies from the recipient) and special immunosuppressant combinations, hyperacute and delayed rejection are to be prevented and xenograft survival is made possible. This makes xenotransplantation extremely interesting in times of massive, increasing organ shortages and still major problems with artificial hearts (cable connections, batteries, strokes, infections) in the area of organ / cell transplantation, as the almost unlimited supply of porcine organs (heart, kidney, lungs, Cornea, (liver rather unlikely)) and cells (pig islet cells in diabetes, nigrostriatal brain cells against Parkinson's disease , cornea of the eye, stem cells, bone / marrow, skin, etc.) not only in Europe, but also many people worldwide animal cells or an organ replacement could be helped.

With 45 original publications, over 110 national and international lectures, two highly endowed international research awards and as a supervisor of over 20 postdocs and doctoral students (e.g.) in several working groups, Brenner has made a significant contribution to the scientific progress of the LMU, primarily through his highly specialized detailed knowledge of xenotransplantation and mechanical circulatory support systems. He was therefore appointed adjunct professor in 2011. Brenner is an international expert in mechanical and "biological" heart substitutes, for which he also has patents (e.g.). In his teaching activity, Brenner has been involved in the introduction of the practice-oriented MECUM training system at the LMU, which is based on the Harvard University concept, from 2007 onwards, he was a lecturer for cardiac surgery at the LMU and from 2011 he was deputy block spokesman for the cardiovascular block in the LMU's new medical student training system, Modul23 . Since 2003, as the head of cardiac surgery training, he has organized around 400 professional and scientific training events, mostly as Monday training courses for specialist training and further education certified by the Bavarian State Medical Association.

More recent research focuses and interests Brenners are miniature artificial hearts in heart valves (cooperation with Robert Jarvik ), inhibition of aging enzymes, cryonics , energy and environmental technology (e.g. electromobility ), essential oils and Ebola .
