Paolo Emilio Sfondrati
Paolo Emilio Sfondrati (born March 21, 1560 in Milan , † February 14, 1618 in Tivoli ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop of Cremona .
Life
He was the son of Paolo Sfondrati, Count of Riviera, and his wife Sigismonda d'Este . His first name is also given as Paolo Camillo , the last name as Sfondrato . He was a great-nephew of Cardinal Francesco Sfondrati and nephew of Pope Gregory XIV , a brother of his father. His upbringing was taken over by his uncle Cardinal Niccolò Sfondrati, who later became Pope Gregory XIV. He studied law . At the court of his uncle, the 17-year-old made friends with Filippo Neri , who was later canonized . Because of this friendship, he was more interested in religion and culture than in politics and economics. At a young age he became abbot of San Pietro al Monte at Civate .
Pope Gregory XIV, his uncle, made him a cardinal priest in the consistory of December 19, 1590 , Paolo Emilio Sfondrati received the cardinal's hat and the titular church of Santa Cecilia on January 14, 1591 and was thus cardinal nepot . On January 27, 1591 governor of Fermo , he was Legatus a latere in Bologna and Romagna from January 30, 1591 to 1592 . Also in 1591 he became governor of Spoleto . He was also Prefect of the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature . Paolo Emilio Sfondrati took part in the conclave of 1591 , in which Pope Innocent IX. was elected, he was also a participant in the conclave of 1592 , from which Clement VIII emerged as Pope. He was also among the cardinals when in the first conclave of 1605 Pope Leo XI. was chosen. He also took part in the second conclave of the same year, which Paul V elected Pope. From January 7, 1607 to January 7, 1608 he was chamberlain of the Holy College of Cardinals .
On September 13, 1607, Paolo Emilio Sfondrati was elected Bishop of Cremona. He received his episcopal ordination on September 16, 1607 in the shrine of Loreto Cardinal Gaspare Alfonso Visconti ; Co- consecrators were Alessandro Strozzi , Archbishop of Fermo , and Rutilio Benzoni , Bishop of Loreto . However, he never resided in his diocese and gave up leadership of the diocese before July 19, 1610. From August 1611 until his death he was Prefect of the Index Congregation . On August 17, 1611 he was raised to Cardinal Bishop of Albano .
Paolo Emilio Sfondrati died on February 14, 1618 in Tivoli and was buried in the Church of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere in Rome .
Act
Cardinal Sfondrati is considered a patron of the arts. In 1600 he financed the restoration and decoration of his titular church Santa Cecilia in Trastevere with 25,000 scudi . He commissioned paintings, including the Madonna del Velo (around 1591).
