Patrick Travis Swilling (* 25. October 1964 in Toccoa , Georgia ) is a former American American football poker players. He played in his career with the New Orleans Saints , Detroit Lions and the Oakland Raiders in the National Football League (NFL) on the position of linebacker and defensive end .
Swilling played six play-off games in his career and lost all of them, no other player in the NFL lost so many times without winning.
Early years
Swilling attended high school in his hometown of Toccoa. He later went to the Georgia Institute of Technology , where he played college football for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets . On April 30, 2009, Swilling was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame .
NFL
New Orleans Saints
Swilling was selected in the 1986 NFL draft by the New Orleans Saints in the third round in 60th place. He went into his first season as a backup linebacker, scoring 26 tackles and four sacks . From his second NFL season he was a starter in his position. Together with Rickey Jackson , he formed the Edge Rusher of the Dome Patrol Defense of the Saints, who dominated the NFL from the mid-1980s to the early 1990s. In the 1991 NFL season , he scored 60 tackles, forced six fumbles and 17 sacks, and was named NFL Defensive Player of the Year . From the 1989 to 1992 season he was nominated four times for the Pro Bowl . In 1991 and 1992 he was also elected to the First-Team All-Pro , making him the first Saints defender to get this twice.
Detroit Lions
For the 1993 season he was traded against a first-round and four-round pick to the Detroit Lions . In addition, they paid Swilling 1.4 million US dollars to remove a no-trade clause from his contract, which they had written into the contract themselves when they tried to sign the restricted free agent Swilling before the 1992 season , whereby the Saints, however, caught up with the treaty. In his first season for the Lions, he was nominated for the fifth time for the Pro Bowl. He also played for the Lions in 1994. In both seasons he reached the play-offs with the Lions. After scoring nearly eleven sacks per season with the Saints, he got only ten overall with the Lions.
Oakland Raiders
In the April 1995 season , he signed with the Oakland Raiders . He received a one-year contract for $ 500,000 in basic earnings and up to $ 2 million in total earnings. Here he switched to the position of the right defensive end . During the training camps of the 1997 season , he announced his retirement. For the 1998 season he came back to the Raiders from retirement. For the Raiders he played in all 48 games, 32 of them from the start. He scored 21 sacks, forced seven fumbles and captured two fumble.
