Patrick Dougherty

Patrick Dougherty (born November 21, 1931 in Kensington , New South Wales , † August 30, 2010 in Bathurst , New South Wales) was an Australian theologian and Roman Catholic Bishop of Bathurst .

Life

Patrick Dougherty studied from 1950 at St. Patrick's College in Manly and later at Propaganda Fide College in Rome. He was ordained a priest on December 7, 1954 in Rome by Archbishop Pietro Sigismondi , secretary of the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide , for the Archdiocese of Sydney . In 1957 he completed his doctoral studies in spiritual theology at the Pontifical Urban University in Rome. After a year of pastoral care in St. Mel’s in Campsie , one of the suburbs of Sydney, he returned to Rome and finished at the request of Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroyhis research project on Mary Potter (1847-1913), the founder of the Little Company of Mary . He was involved in the formation of priests and taught logic, history of philosophy, Latin and Italian at St. Columba's College in Springwood from 1959 to 1961 , was dean of the theological faculty and spiritual for freshmen in 1961 . In 1962 he returned to the Propaganda Fide College in Rome as assistant vice-rector and became its vice-rector in 1967. In 1970 he returned to Australia and became secretary of the Australian Bishops' Conference in Canberra.

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 15, 1976 titular bishop of Lete and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Canberra-Goulburn . He was ordained episcopate on December 8, 1978, by the Archbishop of Canberra, Thomas Vincent Cahill ; Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Sydney, James Darcy Cardinal Freeman , and Archbishop Gino Paro , Apostolic Nuncio to Australia.

On September 1, 1983, Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Bathurst .

Pope Benedict XVI granted his age-related resignation on November 11, 2008.
