Paul Frederick Jabara (born January 31, 1948 in Brooklyn , New York City , † September 29, 1992 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor , singer , songwriter and composer .

Life

Jabara trained as an actor. He was part of the original troupe of the musicals Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar . He took on the role of Frank-N-Furter in the Los Angeles production of the Rocky Horror Show when Tim Curry left the show to star in the film version in England. In 1969 Jabara starred in the film Midnight Cowboy by John Schlesinger and in 1974 in the film The Day of Locust by John Schlesinger, where he sang the song Hot Voo-Doo . In the 1978 film Thank Go It's Friday , he played the role of Carl , the disco-goer, and was featured as the singer on the film's soundtrack album. In 1981 he appeared in another John Schlesinger film; in Honky Tonk Freeway , he played truck driver TJ Tupus

In addition to his work as an actor, he has released several singles and studio albums as a singer. As a songwriter he also wrote various songs for other artists such as Barbra Streisand , Diana Ross and Donna Summer . Jabara originally wrote the song It's Raining Men in 1979 with Paul Shaffer . Over the years until 1982 they offered the disco song to Diana Ross, Donna Summer, Cher and Barbra Streisand , who refused it until Martha Wash and Izora Armstead recorded it. The song was released on September 10, 1982. Jabara died in 1992 in Los Angeles of complications from AIDS .
