Paul Verhoeven [ ˈpʌu̯l vərˈɦuvə (n) ] (born July 18, 1938 in Amsterdam , Netherlands) is a Dutch film director , screenwriter and film producer .

Life

Verhoeven 1980

From 1960 to 1963 Verhoeven made four short films. He studied at the University of Leiden and graduated in 1964 in mathematics and physics . During his military service, he was able to gain first experience with mass and battle scenes in the Royal Netherlands Navy (film service of the marine infantry ).

In 1968 the television series Floris von Rosemund marked the beginning of his successful collaboration with Rutger Hauer , which ended in an irreconcilable dispute in 1985. 1970 began his long-term collaboration with cameraman Jan de Bont . In 1985, Verhoeven moved to Hollywood - disappointed by the critical attitude of the public and the film funding in his home country . In the 2016 documentary Paul Verhoeven - Master of Provocation , Verhoeven explains: “I couldn't achieve American format while sitting comfortably in the Dutch province. The head of Orion said to me, 'Paul, you have to come over here and make films and it'll work. The thoroughly American environment will shield you from your bad European habits [...] 'I was afraid, basically I thought it was terrible, but in the end I dared to take the step. "

Since the mid-1970s, Verhoeven has worked several times with the German cameraman Jost Vacano , whom he met again in Hollywood and with whom he shot RoboCop . Originally Verhoeven wanted to work alternately with the two cameramen, but this only happened once because de Bont switched to directing. Vacano made four more films with Verhoeven until he retired. In 1996 Verhoeven was awarded the Golden Raspberry for his film Showgirls as worst director. He personally picked up this disgraceful award and gave a speech in which he said: “My films are criticized here because they are considered decadent, perverse and greasy. That sure means I'm part of this great American society. Thank you!"

In 2005 Verhoeven returned to Europe to direct the Second World War thriller Black Book with Carice van Houten and Sebastian Koch at Studio Babelsberg . He justified the return and purely European funding of the 17-million- euro production, among other things, by saying that he would thus retain the greatest possible freedom of choice. His first French-language feature film, Elle , a thriller starring Isabelle Huppert , was released in French cinemas on May 25, 2016. For this he received his second invitation to compete at the 66th Cannes International Film Festival .

In February 2017, Verhoeven became the first Dutch jury president to head the competition jury at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival . The next film project announced is a biography of the lesbian nun Benedetta Carlini (1591–1661). Virginie Efira is supposed to play the lead role.

Paul Verhoeven has been married to Martine Tours since April 7, 1967 and has two children.

style

Because many of Verhoeven's films address violence and sexuality , they are the subject of heated debate among film critics and in public. Violence is depicted in Verhoeven's films in a very exaggerated ( RoboCop , Total Recall , Starship Troopers ) or in an extremely "realistic" way ( Flesh and Blood ). Some of his films can also be understood as a kind of caricature based on conventional forms of violence.

Sexuality in Verhoeven's films is often used by critics in the vicinity of pornography and obscenity moved. His films also sparked violent protests from a wide variety of social groups (women's associations, homosexuals) ( Turkish fruits , Spetters , Basic Instinct ). In the documentary Paul Verhoeven - Master of Provocation from 2016, Verhoeven describes: “Such scenes are actually always left out, both in film and in literature. Or it is somehow played down in a trivializing way. Nobody shows how it really is. That's how it is in truth, people lay on top of each other and the thing is pushed in [...] I'm just showing how it really is. "
