action
Rome in AD 64: The city is in ruins, a fire has completely destroyed it. Nero blames the Christians, has many of them arrested and executed. So did the apostle Paul, who was thrown into prison and sentenced to death. In prison, Paul is placed under the supervision of the prison warden Mauritius Gallas, who slowly develops from a staunch supporter of Rome to a person who accepts the teachings of Christians.
In the meantime the writer and former doctor Luke has come to Rome. Here he not only learns about the persecution of Christians, but also has to decide how to lead the insecure young community. Does he take the side of the Roman Christian Cassius, who wants to overthrow Nero by force, or does Luke pursue the goal of the missionaries Priscilla and Aquila, who want to evacuate the people from Rome and start anew elsewhere.
At the same time, Luke visits Paul in prison and begins to write down his life story and teachings. But Luke can also heal Gallas' terminally ill daughter Caelia and thus achieve a rethink in both the Roman and his wife Irenica. Although Gallas can no longer prevent the execution of the apostle Paul, he does tolerate the persecuted Christians being able to flee Rome.
