Pedro Ricardo Cardinal Barreto Jimeno SJ (born February 12, 1944 in Lima , Peru ) is a Peruvian religious priest and Archbishop of Huancayo .

Life

Pedro Barreto Jimeno, the second of six children, joined the Jesuit congregation in Lima in 1961 . He studied philosophy from 1965 to 1967 at the Faculty of the Society of Jesus in Alcalá de Henares (Spain) (Colegio Compañía de Jesus) and theology from 1967 to 1971 at the San Antonio Abad Seminary in Cusco (Peru) and at the Pontifical Faculty in Lima ( Facultad de Teología Pontificia y Civil de Lima). He graduated as a teacher at the Pedagogical Institute Champagnat in Lima (Instituto Superior Pedagógico Particular "Marcelino Champagnat" and "Institut du Language Total"). He was ordained a priest on December 18, 1971 and worked as a pastor in Peru in the cities of Tacna, Lima and Ayacucho.

In 1972 he became professor and spiritual director of the Colegio Cristo Rey in Tacna and superior of the Jesuit community there. In 1982 he became superior of the Colegio Francisco Javier in Lima. In addition, from 1982 to 1987 he was responsible for the youth and vocation departments of the Jesuit Province of Peru and Superior of the Jesuit communities in Juniorado (1982–1985), in Nuestra Señora de los Desamparados in Breña near Lima (1989–1991), in Ayacucho ( 1992-1995), in Tacna (1976-1981 and 1996-2001). From 1996 to 2001 he was pastor and coordinator of the Jesuit apostolic network Red Apostólica Jesuita de Tacna y Moquegua .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Acufida and Vicar Apostolic of Jaén en Peru o San Francisco Javier on November 21, 2001 . The episcopal ordination donated him on 1 January 2002 his predecessor José María Izuzquiza Herranz SJ. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Chimbote, Luis Armando Bambarén Gastelumendi SJ, and Archbishop Rino Passigato , Apostolic Nuncio in Peru. Barreto Jimeno SJ has been a member of the Permanent Council of the Peruvian Bishops' Conference since 2003. In the term of office from 2018 to 2021 he is its first vice president ( Primer Vice President ).

He was named Archbishop of Huancayo on July 17, 2004, and was installed in office on September 5 of the same year. From 2006 to 2010 he was President of the Episcopal Commission for Social Action (CEAS) in Peru.

In the consistory of June 28, 2018, Pope Francis accepted him as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Pietro e Paolo a Via Ostiense in the college of cardinals . On October 6 of the same year, the Pope appointed him a member of the Dicastery for the Holistic Development of Man . The takeover of his titular church took place on March 10, 2019.

Act

Archbishop Pedro Barreto is committed to the interests of the people of La Oroya , for whom he is being attacked with death threats. Due to mining and inadequate environmental regulations, citizens are exposed to massive health problems.

Motto

Pedro Barreto's motto is: “En todo amar y servir” (love and serve in everything). He is dedicated to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Taken from Ignatius of Loyola (No. 233: En todo amar y servir a la Divina Majestad ).
