The Monte Pelmo ( 3168  m ) is one of the highest peaks in the Dolomites . Together with Monte Rite and other peaks, it is one of those mountains that separate the Val di Zoldo from the Valle del Boite .

First ascent

It was first conquered on September 19, 1857 by the Irish Alpine pioneer Sir John Ball . He set out with a chamois hunter from the Boitetal towards Monte Pelmo. Over the long ledge named after Ball, which the chamois hunters refused to cross, Ball reached the large cirque , through which he climbed over the small Pelmo glacier to below the summit structure. Monte Pelmo is the first large summit in the Dolomites that humans reached.

Routes

The Monte Pelmo is one of the great rock domes in the Dolomites, a mountain of enormous proportions. It forms an almost closed block, from whichever side you may look at it.

So there are only a few possibilities for climbing. The best-known (and easiest) ascent leads over the southeast flank. The route of the first climbers still offers a rewarding but long and strenuous mountain tour in the second degree of difficulty. Problems can be found with the above mentioned, exposed ball band . Climbing skills and surefootedness are necessary. The ascent of Monte Pelmo should also be carried out in safe weather and with no snow.

Another worthwhile ascent variant of comparable difficulty goes through the fissura (the rubble-filled crack between the main summit and Pelmetto) and over the Grohmannband to the aforementioned cirque.

A rewarding mountain hike goes around Monte Pelmo from the Rif. Citta di Fiume over the Forcella Val d'Arcia to the Rif. Venezia and back to the starting point (approx. 6-7 hours).

Others

The Pelmo Glacier has not existed for many years.

A few years ago, footprints of dinosaurs were found on an erupted boulder at the foot of the mountain (notice board “Orme di Dinosauri”).
