The Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung Ost is one of the largest urban residential complexes in Vienna . It is located in the 10th Viennese district of Favoriten on the southern slope of the Laaer Berg .

Description and characteristics

The Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung Ost (PAHO for short) was built with the Hansson Center in the years 1966–1977 as a supplement to the already existing Per-Albin-Hansson-Siedlung West and north east of Favoritenstrasse . It stretches to Laaerbergstrasse in the east and is fundamentally different from the western settlement ten years older. While this garden city consists of two- and three-story single and multi-family houses with gardens, the PAHO is a mass housing estate with mostly five to eight-story prefabricated blocks. The plans for the approximately 5000 apartments come from the architects Carl Auböck and Wilhelm Kleyhons . During the ten-year construction period, however, there were also developments in the construction method. The first buildings from the 1960s were rationally erected like building blocks placed in parallel. In the 1970s, people started to break the monotony that resulted from them by making the buildings more staggered, structured and at different heights. It applies to all buildings that they are embedded in generously designed green spaces. The apartments have an average size of 68 m². While almost the entire complex consists almost exclusively of residential buildings, shops, social and cultural facilities are concentrated in the newest component on Favoritenstrasse (Hansson Center). But between the residential buildings there is also a parish church, a retirement home and kindergartens and schools. The settlement has had a direct underground connection since 2017, the U1 runs along the western and southern edge of the settlement and serves the Alaudagasse , Neulaa and Oberlaa stations . The public transport offer is supplemented by bus line 19A, which runs a circular route through the settlement starting from the Alaudagasse station. The streets and alleys of the PAHO are designed so that there is no through traffic ( one-way tours , etc.) and quiet living is possible. In addition, some artists were commissioned with the creation of sculptures that were placed in the green spaces and with the design of the staircase entrances.

Like the other parts of the settlement, the PAHO was named after the social democratic Swedish politician Per Albin Hansson , who after the Second World War made great contributions to the needy Viennese population and, as the creator of the so-called Swedish model, also a role model for social democratic politics in Austria was.

Olof-Palme-Hof

The Olof-Palme-Hof (1972–1976) is the building complex that first catches the eye when coming from Favoritenstrasse. Between Favoritenstrasse and Ada-Christen-Gasse on an area of 34,500 m², it is the largest PAHO building. It also differs from the other houses in the estate in terms of design. It is a mighty, terraced apartment block consisting of four bowl-shaped wings. Twelve structured eight to eleven-storey apartment blocks house 415 apartments, which are opened to the east with their loggias offset by storey. The facility is largely complete to the busy and noisy Favoritenstrasse. In front of it is the Hansson Center with numerous shops and bars. In this area there is also a post office as well as a police station , social facilities and the meeting place with the municipal library and the Favoriten district museum.

District Museum Favoriten

The district museum Favoriten was opened in 1979 and shows from its collections mainly finds from prehistory and early history on the soil of Favoriten, the original figures of the spinner on the cross and the Beschorner cross , excavations at the Johanneskirche Unterlaa , which is considered to be the oldest church in Vienna, a documentation about the revolution year 1848 and about the brickworks of Favoritens, but especially photos and objects from the period from 1850 to 1918.

House Laaerberg

The retirement home was built in 1969/72 according to plans by the architect Rupert Falkner by the Board of Trustees of the Vienna Retirement Homes. In its time it represented a new form of home, which was supposed to enable people to have a maximum of individual freedom but also social contact. It consists of two residential wings, a staff wing and a service wing and has space for 178 single and 27 couple apartments. The dining room is designed in such a way that it can also be used as a theater and cinema hall. Special emphasis was placed on the color design of the entire facility.

schools

The elementary school in Ada-Christen-Gasse 9 was built in 1968/69. This contains a glass mosaic Kindliche Motive (1969) by Kurt Mikula as well as three blocks of artificial stone with aluminum reliefs Der kleine Tiergarten (1969) by Eva Mazzucco .

The school complex in Wendstattgasse consists of an elementary school at number 3, in front of which there is a stainless steel sculpture figure (1974) by Oskar Höfinger , the music and sports school at number 5 with two ceramic reliefs Tree and Sun (1972) by Peter Gangl , and one Circular gym. In the latter there are four mosaic reliefs sun with butterflies , sun with fish , sun with swallows and sun with stars (1972) by Andrea Stepwieser .

Parish Church of St. Paul

The Catholic Church, which is consecrated to the Apostle Paul , was built between 1973 and 1975 according to plans by the architect Armin Dolesch at 5 Jura-Soyfer-Gasse. The bell tower stands separately in front of the nave . The community center houses the community hall, working day chapel, sacristy and youth room.
