Peter Abir Antonisamy

Peter Abir Antonisamy (born October 14, 1951 in Sathipattu , Tamil Nadu , India ) is Bishop of Sultanpet .

Life

Peter Abir Antonisamy attended RC Elementary School in Sathipattu and St. Joseph's Higher Secondary School in Cuddalore . He then attended St. Joseph's College in Tiruchirappalli . In 1970 Abir Antonisamy entered the St. Agnes Minor Seminary in Cuddalore. From 1971 to 1979 Peter Abir Antonisamy studied Catholic theology and philosophy at the Sacred Heart seminary in Poonamelle . He received the sacrament of ordination for the Archdiocese of Pondicherry and Cuddalore on May 1, 1979 .

From 1979 to 1981 Abir Antonisamy was vicar in Athipakkam . In 1983 he earned a Masters in Biblical Theology from St. Peter's Pontifical Institute in Bangalore . Peter Abir Antonisamy then worked as secretary to the archbishop of Pondicherry and Cuddalore and as chancellor of the episcopal curia . From 1984 to 1986 he was Professor of Biblical Theology at Good Shepherd Seminary in Coimbatore . In 1986 Abir Antonisamy became pastor in Kurumbagaram . Peter Abir Antonisamy obtained a Masters in Literature and History from the University of Titrupathy in 1987 . From 1987 to 1990 he was director of the St. Paul's Bible Institute in Poonamelle. Abir Antonisamy continued his studies in Rome from 1990 to 1996 . During this time he lived in the Pontifical College of St. Peter the Apostle . In 1994 Peter Abir Antonisamy obtained a licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Biblical Institute . Abir Antonisamy received his PhD in Biblical Theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in 1996 . From 1996 to 2004 he was again director of the St. Paul's Bible Institute in Poonamelle. Since 2002, Abir Antonisamy has also been Deputy Secretary of the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council and Coordinator for South Asia in the Catholic Biblical Federation . From 2004 to 2010 Peter Abir Antonisamy was Director of the Tamil Nadu Biblical, Catechetical and Liturgical Center . In 2010 Abir Antonisamy became director of the Emmaus Spirituality Center in Sithanagur , which he founded in 2004.

On December 28, 2013, Pope Francis appointed him the first Bishop of Sultanpet. He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Nuncio in India, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio , on February 16 of the following year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Verapoly , Francis Kallarakal , and the Bishop of Coimbatore , Thomas Aquinas Lephonse .
