Peter Ludwig Elder
Peter Ludwig Elder (born November 27, 1798 in Lübeck ; † July 31, 1881 there ) was Syndicus and Senator of the Hanseatic City of Lübeck .
Life
Elder was the son of the then Imperial Notary in Lübeck. He attended the Katharineum in Lübeck until Easter 1816, studied law in Göttingen and Heidelberg . In 1820 he was licensed as a lawyer and notary in his hometown . On January 31, 1844 , he was elected city syndicus at the same time as Heinrich von der Hude .
In the same year Elder was sent to Copenhagen to overcome the resistance of the Danish government against the planned construction of the Lübeck-Büchener Railway , but was unsuccessful with this mission. In 1847, Elder, accompanied by Heinrich Theodor Behn, went to Copenhagen again with the same assignment and this time was able to obtain Danish approval for the construction of the railway through his negotiations.
In 1850 Elder represented the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in the Erfurt Union Parliament , and then from 1850 until his replacement by Friedrich Krüger in 1864 as envoy in the Bundestag of the German Confederation in Frankfurt am Main , where he led the vote of the four free cities every four years.
With the entry into force of the revised Lübeck constitution on December 29, 1851 , the separation of powers was established in the city and the office of the Syndicus, which was no longer compatible with this principle, was repealed. Elder, like the other two Syndici serving at the time, received the office of full senator on January 3, 1852 , but continued to hold the traditional title of Syndicus.
In the years 1851, 1857 and 1858 Elder was a member of the Elbe Shipping Commission and until his abolition in 1864 a permanent member of the Lübeck Higher Court. In addition, he held various functions in the Lübeck administration. He retired on November 5, 1873 .
In 1873 he was awarded the Bene Merenti commemorative coin for his services to Lübeck's well-being .
