Life

Peter Rück, whose father came from Hessental near Schwäbisch Hall , was born on September 6, 1934 in Trimbach (Canton Solothurn, Switzerland). From 1955 to 1961 he studied history and philosophy, majoring in "auxiliary historical sciences" in Basel and Freiburg im Üechtland . His teachers were u. a. Wolfram von den Steinen , Werner Kaegi , Karl Jaspers , Heinrich Barth , Oskar Vasella , Paul Wyser OP , Hans Foerster and Heinrich Schmidinger . He was born in 1961 at Hans Foerster in Freiburg i.Üe. with a dissertation on "The documents of the bishops from Basel to 1213" (Basel 1966). From 1961 to 1963 he was assistant to Heinrich Schmidinger's National Fund and in 1964 he moved to the archives service of the canton of Friborg . As a young scholarship holder of the Swiss National Science Foundation (1968–71), he was entrusted with work on the history of mediaeval archiving in western Switzerland and Savoy, which in 1971 formed the basis of his habilitation. As an employee of the Swiss Federal Archives in Bern , he evaluated Venetian Dispacci from the 17th century for the next two years, before becoming secretary of the Medieval Institute of the University of Friborg until 1976. was under the direction of Pascal Ladner and Carl Pfaff . Since 1967 he has been teaching at the Universities of Freiburg i.Üe. and Bern. During these years he was also President of the German Historical Research Association of the Canton of Friborg . On September 1, 1976 he was appointed associate professor and full professor for general and Swiss history of the Middle Ages at the University of Lausanne on September 1, 1978 . In the 1978 summer semester he read as a visiting professor at the University of Zurich .

In the 1980/81 winter semester, Peter Rück accepted the professorship for historical auxiliary sciences and archive studies in Marburg . The connection between the professorship and the management of the photo archive of older original documents up to 1250 was a particular incentive . This qualitatively and quantitatively unique photo collection gave him the opportunity to develop a diplomatic semiotics that became the center of his teaching and research: In the footsteps of Mabillon following what was not only limited to the object - the documents - but was aimed primarily at the use of the probabilistic-statistical method and the observance of symbolic aspects, he tried to make the additional visual and acoustic messages visible. Aspects that can be perceived by the senses should be added to the view of this source group, which has long been shortened to the text content, and the document should be revealed as a system of codes for communication.

The “International Marburg Colloquia” initiated by him first addressed the documentary material accessible in photographic collections (September 1986) and the writing material parchment (September 1987). In the following colloquia, the focus was again on the external characteristics of the certificate with the graphic symbols (September 1989) and the methods of writing description (September 1990). The volumes of essays with the contributions of the participating scientists were widely recognized beyond the national borders and quickly attained the status of standard works. A central concern for him was the history of science and the question of the location of the auxiliary sciences today. He took the centenary of the Institute for Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the Philipps University of Marburg (1894–1994) and Harry Bresslaus (1848–1926) 's 150th birthday as an opportunity to discuss this topic at scientific colloquia.

Peter Rück has been a member since 1986, since 1990 a board member of the Commission internationale de diplomatique and since 1989 the representative of the German editing of the Vocabulaire international de la diplomatique . He was a member of the Collectif de rédaction of the Parisian Gazette du Livre médiéval (1989–1994) and since 1994 a member of the editorial board of Signo. Revista de Historia de la Cultura Escrita , Universidad de Alcalá de Henares , Spain. In addition, he published the series “Historical Auxiliary Sciences” (Thorbecke Verlag) and “elementa diplomatica”.

After the summer semester of 1999, Peter Rück retired in Marburg and returned to Switzerland. In 2000 the Marburg professorship for historical auxiliary sciences was canceled. After a serious illness, he died three days after his 70th birthday in the Olten Cantonal Hospital and was buried in Trimbach.
