Peter Sturm (actor, 1909)
Peter Sturm , actually Josef Michel Dischel (born August 24, 1909 in Vienna , Austria-Hungary , † May 11, 1984 in East Berlin ), was an Austrian actor, communist and resistance fighter against National Socialism.
Life
Dischel came from a religious Jewish family. He first learned acting from Raoul Aslan , worked alongside as a radio technician and, as an actor, took the stage name Peter Sturm . He joined the Social Democratic Party of Austria and after the Schutzbund uprising in February 1934, the illegal Communist Party of Austria . In 1936 he worked with the ABC cabaret led by Leon Askin , in which Jura Soyfer also participated.
After Austria's annexation in 1938, he was arrested, sent to Dachau and then to Buchenwald . In 1939 he was released and allowed to emigrate to Italy, from where he illegally moved to France (Marseille). After the German invasion he was interned in 1941, but managed to escape, was arrested again in August 1942 and deported to Auschwitz via the Drancy assembly camp. In January 1945 he survived the death march from Auschwitz to Buchenwald concentration camp. There the prisoners were liberated by the 3rd US Army .
In 1945 he went back to Vienna and worked there briefly as a broadcaster for the Soviet military administration, then until 1956 as an actor at the Theater in der Josefstadt and at the New Theater in der Scala . When this was closed in 1956, he went to DEFA in Berlin / GDR with several colleagues . There he became known as a film actor, above all through the role of August Rose in the film adaptation of the novel Nackt unter Wölfen (1963), in which he was able to bring autobiographical experiences; He had played the same role 3 years earlier in the television game of the same name. Other well-known films he worked on were the dramas Professor Mamlock (1961) and Jakob the Liar (1974) . Sturm was also known for numerous television roles in the GDR, including the crime series Polizeiruf 110 .
In 1961 Sturm was honored with the GDR Art Prize.
