history

The walled-in Roman stone

The church was originally a chapel belonging to Gjaidhof Castle . It is first mentioned in a document in 1219. In 1240 it was raised to an independent parish. In 1660 Leopold I had a high altar built. In the middle of the 18th century, the so-called Wieskapelle was added to the choir. In 1760, the present high altar was donated to the church by Empress Maria Theresa . She also had the interior redesigned in the Rococo style by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll . The inside of the church was renovated in 1973 and the outside in 1979. Further renovations took place in 2004 and 2006.

layout

The core of the church is late Romanesque and was later expanded with baroque and neo-Romanesque additions and alterations. The neo-Romanesque tower with a pointed helmet is attached to the north of the church and was built in 1876. On the outer wall there is a walled-in, figural “Roman stone” with busts, dated to the 3rd century. The windows of the southern nave wall have Gothic shapes on the outside.

The originally flat-roofed nave is now vaulted by a pressed lance cap barrel, which was probably built in 1667 . The somewhat retracted, late Romanesque choir square is separated from the nave by a constricted front arch . The rectangular sacristy attached to the east of the choir dates from 1667. In the north of the choir, a rectangular side chapel , the Wieskapelle, was added , presumably in the second third of the 18th century . There are interior niches in the northern slopes of the chapel. In the western part of the nave there is a baroque, three-axis and two-bay gallery , which rests on pillars and has a groin vault .

The interior, designed in the Rococo style, was donated by Empress Maria Theresa in 1760 . The high altar made of rococo parts, erected in 1760, bears a statue of grace of Mary in the thorn with the baby Jesus in her right arm. Both figures have metal crowns and the baby Jesus is holding an orb in his hands. The statue was probably originally Gothic and was reworked or replaced by a baroque copy. On the free-standing, neo-baroque tabernacle there are two baroque angel figures. The altarpiece on the right side altar shows the Archangel Gabriel and that on the left shows St. Francis Xavier . The altar of the side chapel is also designed in rococo style. He carries a statue of the Lord in the meadow with kneeling angels. In the side niches there are statues of the apostles Peter and Paul made by Balthasar Ferdinand Moll in 1760 . In the sacristy there is a metal drive made in 1643, which depicts Our Lady on the crescent moon. The organ with its neo-Romanesque forms was built by Carl Billich in 1880.

In the northern part of the roof structure of the nave there are probably Gothic remains of frescoes dating from the Middle Ages . These show a rolled band, which used to be the end below the original flat ceiling. There are also field divisions and a dragon representation.

Legends

According to legend, the name “Maria im Dorn” comes from the fact that in 1112 the statue of the Mother of God was stolen from the small church and found in a thorn bush in 1212. In reality, the name developed from the old name "Maria im Turn", which means something like "Maria in the tower" and indicates that the church used to be a castle chapel. In the parish chronicle, several miracles are mentioned that are said to have occurred at the pilgrimage site.
