The reed was made arable with a royal decree of 1822, and efforts to achieve intensive use continued until around the 1970s. In 1991, the Großer Gruben area was placed under protection as a protected forest, and drainage was reduced in 1994. From 2010, central areas of the moor were extensively rewetted and in 2012 the area designated as a protected forest was expanded to around 440 hectares.
Protection purpose
The main protective purpose is to prevent the uninfluenced spontaneous development of bogus - spruce -, bogus - pine - bog , black alder - brook, bird cherry - alder - ash , forest ziest - hornbeam - pedunculate oak - and woodruff - beech forests as well as the adjacent areas to secure its animal and plant species.
This includes the protection of the habitats and communities that are located in the area, that change in the course of the self-dynamic development of the forest stand within the protected area or that arise from the self-dynamic development. In addition, the scientific observation of the development processes should be ensured.
Another protection purpose is the contribution to the conservation of biological diversity in Europe. The spell forest is part of the FFH area “ Pfrunger Ried und Seen bei Illmensee ” recognized by the EU Commission as well as the bird sanctuary “ Pfrunger und Burgweiler Ried ”. In the protected forest there are in particular occurrences of the priority habitat type “peat forests” in Annex I of the Habitats Directive.

Bannwald Tower
The Bannwald Tower is a 38.8 m high observation tower that the municipality of Ostrach had built in 2016 at the southeast end of the Hornung. 218 steps lead to the roof podium of the wooden tower, from which there is a 360 ° panoramic view of the Bannwald and the Ried.
Flora and fauna
In 1998, more than 1,600 species of fungi , plants and animals were described in a species inventory . Some of these species are on the Red List of Endangered Species in Baden-Württemberg, some of them are threatened with extinction.
Many living beings, including wood-decomposing fungi and microorganisms, are dependent on the different stages of degradation and development of the dead and old wood; these in turn are the basis of food for large and small predators .
In the case of the beetles , 29 species have so far been detected in the Bannwald, seven of which are classified as endangered nationwide, including the large tinder sponge poch beetle ( Dorcatoma robusta ), a species that has not yet been detected in the Lake Constance - Upper Swabia area .
