Philipp Fischer (doctor)

Philipp Fischer (born May 1, 1744 in Hörgertshausen ; † August 2, 1800 in Ingolstadt ) was a German medical doctor, elector's personal physician to Maximilian III. Joseph von Bayern and university professor in Ingolstadt.

He came from a humble background in the then Lower Bavarian town of Hörgertshausen. His father was a local farmer.

Life

School career

After receiving Latin lessons from the local dean, he attended the cathedral high school in Freising . He earned the maintenance for this by giving lessons to his classmates. At the grammar school he met the electoral councilor and canon Heinrich Braun , who took him on a trip through Switzerland after graduating from high school . There he became acquainted with some doctors and then he wanted Medicine study.

Academic career

From 1763 to 1765 he studied philosophy and mathematics in Salzburg and graduated with a bachelor's degree . Through the Protomedicus von Wolter he was admitted to the medical faculty of the University of Ingolstadt with an electoral scholarship and devoted himself to studying medicine and field surgery for four years. After taking his exams in Munich , he came through von Wolter and the Elector Maximilian III. Joseph enjoys the benefit of further education on a six-year study trip paid for by the elector. He spent two years at the University of Strasbourg , where a. a. Johann Friedrich Lobstein . In 1772 he went to Nancy and met Jadelot there. Shortly afterwards he visited all the hospitals in Paris and attended lectures by Professors Portal, Félix Vicq d'Azyr , Dessault and Beaudeloque. He also attended the veterinary lectures d'Aubeton. His journey took him through London and Edinburgh to luminaries in medicine, chemistry and physics. In Edinburgh he received a diploma in 1776 and became a member of the Royal Medical Society . His return journey took him via Oxford , Rotterdam , Leyden , Amsterdam and Utrecht and many German cities where he attended lectures and made friends.

Career

At the end of 1776 he was back in Ingolstadt and began to prepare for his doctoral thesis entitled " Dissertatio medico-forensis: An deligatio funiculi umbilicalis in neonatis absolute sit necessaria? " On February 1, 1777, he defended it with such success that he not only received approval for a practice, but also received the title of Medical Councilor on February 15, 1778 and an appointment as a personal physician with earnings of 800 guilders a year . After the death of Maximilian III. Joseph's on December 30, 1777 all that remained for him was the title of personal physician and earnings of 400 guilders. On October 27, 1778 he became a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1779 he received the call of a full professor at the University of Ingolstadt. In 1782 he took over the post of surgery teacher , but only took over his salary after Stebler's death in 1789. In 1793 and shortly afterwards he had two strokes and suffered from depression . It was not until 1797 that he was able to take over the position of dean at the medical faculty, but refused the title of rector. From 1798 onwards his health deteriorated rapidly and he was often bedridden until he passed away on August 2nd, 1800. He was buried in Ingolstadt. Today a memorial stone still commemorates Prof. Dr. Philipp Fischer in the All Souls Chapel in the parish church of St. Jakobus the Elder and a street named after him in Hörgertshausen.

Charity

Philipp Fischer, who was unmarried and childless until his death, was very concerned about the welfare of his fellow human beings. He treated many poor patients without pay and donated a lot for the needy. Above all, his will showed his Christian attitude.

  • Donation to the parish of Hörgertshausen for furnishing the parish church of St. James the Elder (1790)
  • After his death, he bequeathed his very valuable library to the University of Ingolstadt (500 volumes), the humanities writings were given to the Prince-Bishop's Lyceum Freising and the other books were given to his friends or poor medical students.
  • Foundation of the Philipp Fischer charity fund in Hörgertshausen to support the needy with a sum of 1910 guilders (1804–1952) and construction of a house for frail people in Hörgertshausen (1800)
  • Donation for the church fund St. Alban
  • The promissory notes in his possession were returned to the debtors without claims (1800)
