Philipp Gail (entrepreneur)

Georg Philipp Gail (born December 7, 1785 in Dillenburg , † August 30, 1865 in Gießen ) was a Hessian tobacco manufacturer and liberal politician and member of the 2nd Chamber of the Land estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse .

Life

Philipp Gail was the son of the bookbinder and businessman Georg Christian Gail (1756-1834) and his wife Christiane Katharina, née Pfitzer (1760-1834). Gail, who was an evangelical believer, married Marie Susanne Johanette nee Busch (1791–1841) on July 8, 1812 in Giessen . After the death of his first wife, he married her second sister Marie Christiane (1789–1882) on September 15, 1842. Philipp Gail's sister, Magdalena, married Karl Friedrich Silbereisen (1794–1854), from 1825 mayor of Gießen.

Gail was the founder of the Gail'schen cigar factory in Giessen and managed the company until his death. His son Georg Karl Gail (1819–1882) took over the company and was the first president of the newly formed Gießen Chamber of Commerce from 1872–1874 . Another son, Ferdinand Gail , became a partner in the company and also a member of parliament.

From 1826 to 1830 he was a member of the Second Chamber of the Estates. He was elected for the constituency of Oberhessen 13 / Heuchelheim . From 1822 to 1865 he was a city councilor in Gießen, where he was also mayor. In 1848 he was a member of the preliminary parliament .

Philipp Gail put her today under the name Gail'scher Park known and under monument protection standing landscape park in Biebertaler district Rodheim on. Georg-Philipp-Gail-Strasse in Giessen is named after him.
