The photokina (subtitle: Imaging Unlimited ) is the world's leading trade fair for the photo, video and imaging industry. It was carried out every two years in autumn until 2018. From 2020 it should take place annually in May in Cologne . Due to the COVID-19 pandemic , the date has been postponed from May 2020 to May 2022. The organizer is Koelnmesse GmbH , the ideal sponsor of the Photoindustrie-Verband e. V.

On the photokina 2018 812 companies, of which 69 percent came from abroad, their products and services presented. Around 180,000 visitors from 127 countries came.

history

The first photokina was held in 1950 on the initiative of the President of the Photo Association , Bruno Uhl . So-called picture shows , which were organized by Leo Fritz Gruber until 1980, are held as a supporting program .

While photokina only took place at irregular intervals in its early years, the organizers decided in 1966 to consistently hold it every two years, in autumn. In 1974, photokina became a trade fair, which was accompanied by a first drop in visitors compared to the previous year: while the trade fair recorded more than 250,000 visitors in 1972, two years later there were only 95,000 professionals, of which, however, a significantly higher proportion were foreign guests . The increasing internationalization of photokina prompted the organizers to change the subtitle (which until then was either “World Fair for Images”, “World Fair for Photography” or “World Fair for Image - Sound - Professional Media”) from German to English. From 2002 to 2014, photokina was subtitled “World of Imaging”. Since 2016 the subtitle has been "Imaging Unlimited". Since 1988 amateurs have had access to the fair again.

From 1982 to 1998 the "German Camera Prize Cologne" was awarded for special camera work in film and television productions at photokina. In 1988 the Photo Industry Association initiated the “largest picture show in the world”, which stretched 1,300 meters from the exhibition halls to the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and entered the Guinness Book of Records .

Since 2008, the city of Cologne and photokina have been organizing photo workshops, shootings, exhibitions and other events aimed at locals in cooperation with Cologne-based companies and institutions. In 2016, "Cologne photographed" was renamed "PROLOGUE by photokina" as part of the new brand identity.

The realignment was announced in 2018, the date shifted to spring with annual implementation. However, the premiere of the realignment was then canceled and postponed to 2020. Industry giants such as Nikon, Leica and Olympus have also canceled 2020. Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic , the trade fair from May 27th to May 30th, 2020 was canceled and is scheduled to take place from May 18th to 21st, 2022.
