The story of Pierz began in 1869 when the Pierz Township , which still exists today , was established. The township was named after the Slovenian Catholic priest Francis Xavier Pierz . In 1892 the present town, which previously was as Rich Prairie was known in Pierz renamed and as a separate municipality incorporated .

Around the Catholic St. Joseph's Church , which was built in 1888 and still characterizes the cityscape today, Catholic German immigrants increasingly settled. About 80 percent of today's residents are of German descent.
