Plumbopalladinite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of the elements, more precisely metals and intermetallic compounds . It crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition Pd 3 Pb 2 and forms grains up to 0.7 mm in size, which combine to form small aggregates.

Etymology and history

Plumbopalladinite was first found in 1970 by AD Genkin, TL Evstigneewa, LN Vyalsow, IP Laputina and NW Tronewa in the type locality , the Mayak mine near Norilsk in Siberia ( Russia ). It is named after its composition, the elements palladium and lead .

classification

In the Strunz system , plumbopalladinite is counted among the metals and intermetallic compounds, a subgroup of the elements. After the 8th edition, it forms a group together with Atokit , Niggliit , Palarstanid , Rustenburgit , Stannopalladinit and Zvyagintsevit . In the 9th edition it forms a subgroup of PGE (platinum group elements) metal alloys with stannopalladinite.

In the Dana system , it forms a separate subgroup of the metallic elements and alloys with platinum metals .

Education and Locations

Plumbopalladinite is formed in sulfidic copper-nickel ores. It is associated with cubanite , talnakhite , polarite , stannopalladinite, silver , sphalerite and galena .

In addition to the type locality, only one other find is known from Stillwater County in the US state of Montana .

Crystal structure

Plumbopalladinite crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system in the space group P6 3 mc with the lattice parameters a = 4.47  Å and c = 5.72 Å and one formula unit per unit cell .
