Niggliite is a very rare mineral from the mineral class of the elements, more precisely the metals and intermetallic compounds . It crystallizes in a hexagonal crystal system with the chemical composition PtSn and forms round inclusions up to 75 μm in size and silver-white in color.

Etymology and history

Niggliit was first found in 1936 by DL Scholtz in his type locality Waterfall Gorge in Pondoland , Transkei ( South Africa ). It is named after the Swiss crystallographer Paul Niggli .

classification

In Strunz's systematics , niggliite is counted among the metals and intermetallic compounds, a subgroup of the elements. After the 8th edition , it forms a group together with atokite , palarstanide , plumbopalladinite , rustenburgite , stannopalladinite and zvyagintsevit . In the 9th edition it forms a separate subgroup of the PGE (platinum group elements) metal alloys.

In the Dana system, which is mainly used in the English-speaking world , it forms a separate subgroup of metallic elements and alloys with platinum metals .

Education and Locations

Niggliit forms in veins under hydrothermal conditions. Depending on the deposit, it is associated with pentlandite , chalcopyrite , bornite , parkerite , insizwaite , cubanite , pyrrhotite , among others ; Stannopalladinite , hessite , platinum and palladium tellurides or froodite .

In addition to its type locality, there are other finds from the Bushveld complex and Rustenburg in South Africa , Wuchuan and Koktokay in China , Montschegorsk and Norilsk is Russia , Goodnews Bay in Alaska and Knox County in the US state of Maine .

Crystal structure

Niggliite crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system in the space group P6 3 / mmc with the lattice parameters a = 4.10  Å , and c = 5.432 Å as well as two formula units per unit cell .
