action

Half a year ago, shop owner Alfons Wegener was knocked down with a beer bottle at work and died a little later in hospital. A daily income of 900 marks and a lot of change were stolen from his coffers, including a rare foreign coin, the appearance of which is known to the investigators. At that time, Captain Peter Fuchs carried out the investigation, all of the shop's customers were interviewed, except for the last customer, who could not be found. She also did not answer a call to the police. Also not to be found was a young man who, according to the customer and Wegener's friend Erich Brender, was not far from the shop on the day of the act. Now Peter Fuchs hands the files over to Lieutenant Thomas Grawe, who is supposed to take care of the case.

Grawe soon despairs of the task. The witnesses of that time have little new aspect to add to their earlier testimony. The old Mrs. Felsch remembers that when she went shopping she saw a half-empty beer bottle on one of the shelves an hour before the shop closed. The shop, however, was empty except for Alfons Wegener. The behavior of the Brender couple is again striking. Erich Brender has been suffering from chronic pancreatitis for two years and has completely withdrawn since Wegener's death. He feels seriously ill, even if his doctor reassures Wegener's daughter: The disease is not life-threatening. In his retreat into private life, Erich, who used to be fun-loving, is supported by his wife Ruth. She shields her husband from the outside world, but suffers from the situation. The neighbors have always considered her a strange woman. Some of their behavior is due to jealousy, as Erich had an affair with the younger Elisabeth Müller some time ago.

As Thomas Grawe got stuck with his investigation, he distributed leaflets informing about the case and asking for help. He hopes that the ominous last customer will contact him. She is Elisabeth. She tries uncertainly to talk to Erich, but is turned down by his wife. Now she goes to the police and confesses that she was the last customer at the time. She says that she saw Erich in an aisle behind the counter. She didn't report him six months ago because she wanted to talk to him first. When she found out about his illness, she had hoped for the police to investigate, who would find the perpetrator without her help. During his interrogation, Erich admits that he first had a beer in Alfons Wegener's shop. After an argument with Alfons, which, among other things, revolved around Erich's alcohol problem, he was violent. He had lost his shoe, besieged by Alfons, and in his anger hit Alfons with the shoe. Then he fled. He did not strike with a beer bottle, nor did he steal any money. Thomas Grawe is at a loss. Looking back at the crime scene photos, he remembers seeing a box of coins at Brenders' premises that a grandchild had thrown to the ground in his presence. He returns to the Brenders with Peter Fuchs. In fact, in the box he finds the foreign coin that was stolen from Wegener's cash register. It turns out that Erich's wife Ruth went back to the shop to get Erich's shoe. Alfons Wegener woke up and tried to call the police. Ruth knocked him down with the beer bottle. Since the cash register was open, it also took Wegener's daily income. Erich reacts angrily to the confession, as his wife has hidden him from the public for months out of self-interest. Ruth is arrested.
