The Sass Pordoi ( 2950  m slm , also Sas Pordoi or Sas de Pordoi German Pordoispitze ) is a plateau-shaped rocky peak in the Sella massif in the Dolomites . It can be reached by cable car from the Pordoi Pass . At the mountain station there is a lookout point with a panoramic terrace and restaurant. There is also the starting point for challenging hiking trails and via ferratas in the Sella area.

The cableway

The Funivia del Sass Pordoi cable car , built in 1962 and carrying 65 people in four minutes over an altitude difference of almost 700 m from the Pordoisattel to the rocky plateau on the summit, was one of the first in the Dolomites. It was modernized in 1994/95. The restaurant at the mountain station is called Rifugio Maria after Maria Piaz (died 1971), the pioneer of tourism on the Pordoi Pass and, with her son Francesco, the initiator of the cable car.

Hiking and climbing routes, ski runs

The mountain can also be climbed on foot through steep scree cirques and via ferratas. The shortest route from the south runs from the Pordoi pass through the Pordoischarte below the cable car, another ascent from ( Pian de Schiavaneis ) through the Val Lastìès . From the north, an ascent route runs from Passo Gardena through Val Setus or, more difficult, via the Pisciadù via ferrata with the intermediate destination Pisciadùhütte across the Sella. The ascent from Colfosco through the scree cirque of the Mittagstal is 45 ° steep in places and is hardly ever climbed; only a few mountain bikers have dared to descend so far.

The cable car saves these difficult and arduous ascents, so that most visitors concentrate on the comparatively easy ascent of Piz Boè.

In the winter season, the Pordoischarte is a popular, difficult descent for experienced skiers. However, the local tourist association only recommends two more unguarded and unsigned ski runs through the Val Lastìes and the Mittagstal valley with a mountain guide in very good snow conditions and safe weather.
