Porta Markt is a shopping center in the Barkhausen district of the East Westphalian city of Porta Westfalica . The commercial area, which consists of several separate buildings, is located north of the Wiehengebirge on the border with Minden on the federal road 61 that formerly ran through the district , but is now routed through the Weserauentunnel . The cities of Bad Oeynhausen with the Werre-Park shopping center (also on the B 61) and Bückeburg are in the catchment area .

history

In 1965, the furniture store Porta Möbel opened its new headquarters in the industrial area west of the B 61. Here, 48.8 hectares of land were designated "on the green field " for business settlements. Today Porta Möbel is one of the largest furniture markets with a total sales area of 25,000 m². More shops opened in the immediate vicinity, and large, high-turnover sales outlets were added from 1993. Directly opposite Porta Möbel , a connected sales area was created with Media Markt (3,400 m² sales area), the Toys'R'Us toy market and an Edeka center. Further settlements are a garden center and hardware store. This created the largest shopping center in terms of area in East Westphalia.

In 2006 , the new Minden-Lübbecke district hospital was built to the west of the shopping center on an area west of Porta Markt, in the Häverstädt district of Minden . This new building was opened in 2008. In this context, after the relocation of the B 61 into the Weserauentunnel, there were once again major changes in the traffic connection. In addition to car traffic, they also affected public transport connections.

Transport links

The Porta Markt shopping center can be easily reached by car via federal highway 65 . The four-lane federal road that came from the northeast across the Weser ends today at the junction west of the Porta-Markt , a continuation from here to Lübbecke is planned. The B 61 in north-south direction is connected to the B 65 east of the shopping center. Because of the good transport links from all directions, a catchment area of up to 75 km away in an approximate radius is assumed. A high proportion of customers come from the Lower Saxony districts of Nienburg , Diepholz , Schaumburg and Hameln-Pyrmont as well as from the directly connected North Rhine-Westphalian district of Minden-Lübbecke and Herford district .

There are bus connections to Minden, Bad Oeynhausen, local mountains and icebergs .

competitor

Due to the optimal centrality of the shopping center built on the green field, the shops in the center of the Hausberge of Porta Westfalica and especially in the city center of Minden have faced very strong competition. Many customers are already there as lost or threatened to migrate. As a result of this situation, Minden has been discussing its own large shopping center in the city center since around the year 2000, but this has not yet been realized. In the 1970s and up to the 1990s, the Hagemeyer, C&A and Karstadt department stores (or Hertie , closed since 2009) were able to achieve this function. In the 1990s, Bad Oeynhausen was finally forced to approve its own Werre-Park shopping center, which had been prevented for a long time , in order to regain the purchasing power of its customers in Bad Oeynhausen. In the east, the next largest shopping center can only be found in Hanover- Altwarmbüchen, 65 km away , while in the south there are several smaller shopping centers in Hameln . The nearest regional centers are Bielefeld and Osnabrück .
