history

Portenhagen was created as a Hagendorf in the 12th century . It was first mentioned in 1366 by the noblemen of Homburg together with the former villages of Bedeso and Honwarde . In a feud between the noble lords of Homburg and the noble lords of Luthardessen , Portenhagen was completely destroyed in 1380 and was uninhabited for over two centuries.

Around 1583 to 1589, some families settled at the old location in the forest and rebuilt Portenhagen. In order to protect the reclaimed and cultivated land from game, the settlers were forced to fence it in. At the entrance there was a driveway with a gate (porte). The settlers lived “at the Porte in den Hagen”, and this is how the place name came about.

In 1689, Portenhagen had 118 inhabitants, including Halbmeier , Kötner , body breeders and swineherd . In 1738 the place got its own school and in 1920 it was supplied with electricity. The families who have lived here from then to now are called Rolf, Meysold, Brandt and Wolter.

During the Thirty Years War , the Portenhagen chapel, which according to the chronicler Johannes Letzner had survived the feud of 1380, was destroyed. The rescued bell was first hung in a free-standing bell cage.

It was not until the 18th century that a building was erected that served as a school with a chapel and was equipped with a bell. In 1902 the company moved to a new building where teaching was held until 1964. Since then, the Portenhagen volunteer fire brigade , which was founded in 1934 and provides fire protection and general aid, has been based there as a fire station .

Portenhagen was incorporated into the city of Dassel on March 1, 1974.
