Portugalete is a city in the Spanish Basque Country (province of Bizkaia ).
Portugalete has 45,766 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) on an area of 3 km². Portugalete is located northwest of the provincial capital Bilbao on the Ría de Bilbao , the mouth of the Nervión River in the Bay of Biscay , which is navigable for seagoing ships , and belongs to the district (Spanish Comarca , Basque Eskualdea ) Greater Bilbao and the metropolitan area of Bilbao.
Portugalete is about the oldest transporter bridge that in 1893 the world of Alberto de Palacio y Elissague built Puente de Vizcaya , with the opposite district Las Arenas of Getxo connected. Since 2006, the ferry is one of the world heritage of UNESCO .
