The tournaments

EM 1984

In the first qualification, in which the groups were put together from a regional point of view, the Portuguese faced Italy , France and Switzerland , even if these three countries are not adjacent to Portugal. The Portuguese could only score with two draws in the home games against France and Switzerland. Alfredina scored the only goal for Portugal in a 1-1 draw against Switzerland. All other games were lost and in the end the last place in the group was taken.

EM 1987 to 1993

Portugal did not participate in the following four qualifications.

EM 1995

Portugal wanted to qualify again for the 1995 European Championship, which took place without a final round. Again they met France and Italy and this time Scotland against which both games were won (8: 2 and 2: 1). In addition, a 2-1 win against the Italians who had already qualified for the quarter-finals succeeded on the last matchday. The three other games were lost, so that in the end the third place in the group jumped out.

European Championship 1997 in Norway

In autumn 1995 the qualification for the next European Championship finals began for the 34 teams, including Portugal again, and which was held for the first time with eight teams. Due to the different strengths of the teams entered, the qualification was divided into two categories. The 16 strongest teams, which also included Portugal, played for the direct qualification, the 18 weaker teams for the opportunity to play in the next qualification in the higher category. Portugal played again against Italy and this time England and Croatia , against which both games were won. Since the other games were lost, only third place jumped out again. In the playoffs against a group runner-up, however, they had the chance to qualify for the finals. Opponents were the Danes , against whom both games were lost (1: 7 and 0: 5).

EM 2001 in Germany

In qualifying for the 2001 European Championship, the Portuguese again played in Category A. This time, opponents were England, Norway and Switzerland, against whom the only victory was achieved. In addition, they played again a draw against the English women. When they were third in the group, they faced Italy in the playoffs against a group runner-up. After a 3-0 away defeat, the 1-0 home game was not enough to reach the finals.

EM 2005 in England

For the EM 2005 the host was determined in advance for the first time and England was awarded the contract for the event. The last time the qualification took place in two categories. Portugal played again in the A category and met defending champions and world champions Germany , the Czech Republic , Scotland and the Ukraine . Only in the first game in Ukraine they won (1-0), all other games were lost, against the world champions even twice in double digits, with 0:13 being the highest defeat to date. In the end, only the last group place remained with the most goals conceded (42) of all participants in the A category. Group winners Germany then defended the title in England.

EM 2009 in Finland

The EM 2009 took place in Finland . For the first time, twelve teams took part in the tournament. The qualification mode has also been changed. Only the 20 weakest national teams contested the first qualifying round. Portugal did not have to intervene until the second qualifying round, but the qualification went even worse: for the first time since the first participation, no game could be won. There were only two draws against Denmark, Ukraine, Scotland and Slovakia (0-0 in Scotland and 1-1 in Ukraine). The other games were lost and the last place was taken again. After all, there were only 18 goals conceded this time.

EM 2013 in Sweden

The EM 2013 took place for the second time in Sweden . Again the qualification was started by the weaker teams, but this time only by the eight weakest teams. Portugal did not have to intervene again until the second round and were drawn into the group with Denmark. Other opponents were the Czech Republic , Austria and Armenia , against whom the highest win in Portuguese international history was achieved with 8-0 in the first game. The home game against the Armenians was also won 6-0. The other games were lost, however. After all, this time the penultimate group place jumped out, but it was not enough to qualify for the finals.

EM 2017 in the Netherlands

Starting line-ups in the first European Championship final game of the Portuguese

The 2017 European Championship took place in the Netherlands and for the first time with 16 teams. Portugal was drawn into the group with Spain for qualification and also met the teams from Finland , Ireland and Montenegro . Portugal started qualifying with a 2-1 home loss to Ireland. After a 6-1 win against the Montenegrins participating for the first time, both games were lost against their Spanish neighbors. After a 3-0 win in Montenegro, they achieved a goalless draw in Finland. In the second leg in their home stadium they were already 2-0 down after 27 minutes, but Cláudia Neto scored the next goal two minutes later, then equalized with a penalty in the 45th minute and again with a penalty in the 84th minute Winning goal. However, they still had three points less than the Northern Europeans and needed a win in Ireland on the last day of the game and were also dependent on Spanish neighborhood help against Finland, which the Spaniards delivered with a 5-0 victory. In Ireland it was Neto again who scored the only goal of the game in the 78th minute. The Portuguese and Finns were tied on points and since the Portuguese had won the direct comparison, they were second in the group. However, they were the worst runners-up in the group and therefore had to play in two playoff games against the second-worst runners-up Romania , where they had reached home first. After a 0-0 home game it was also 0-0 in the second leg after 90 minutes, so the game was extended. Then Andreia Norton , who came on in the 78th minute for her first international match, scored the 1-0 for Portugal in stoppage time in the first half of extra time with her first international goal. The Romanians were able to equalize in the 111th minute, but due to the away goals rule , Portugal qualified for the European Championship finals for the first time.

For the draw for the final groups on November 8, 2016, the Portuguese were assigned to Pot 4 and group D with England, neighbors Spain and Scotland, which also took part for the first time, were drawn. In the first game against Spain they lost 2-0, but then won against Scotland. So they still had the chance to qualify for the knockout round in the last game against the English, but needed at least one draw if Spain did not win against Scotland. Although the English national coach mostly fielded players who had not been used before, they were able to win against Portugal, so that the Portuguese were eliminated despite the Spanish defeat against Scotland.
