description

Flowers with distinct sap marks on the petals

The gold cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches a stature height of 5 to 35 centimeters. The arching, ascending and branched stem is hairy and richly leafed. The long-stalked basal leaves are five-fingered. The upper side of the leaf is matt green; The leaf veins are translucent when viewed against the light underneath the leaf. The leaf margin is hairy silky.

The flowering period extends from June to September. Only a few flowers are formed per plant. The hermaphrodite flowers are radially symmetrical with a diameter of 15 to 20 millimeters . The chalice and the outer chalice are of the same length. The golden yellow petals are upside-down heart-shaped, slightly edged and there is often an orange-colored spot on the bottom ( juice mark ). There are about 20  stamens .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14, less often 28 or 56.

ecology

The pollination takes place mainly through flies . Reproduction takes place on the path of the Amphimixis .

The fruits are spread by endozoochory .

Occurrence

The distribution area of the golden cinquefoil includes the Alps and the mountains of southern and central Europe at altitudes between 1,300 and 3,200 meters. In the Allgäu Alps it rises to an altitude of 2250 meters on the western summit of the Nebelhorn and in the Tyrolean part on the Rothornspitze . It occurs in central Europe in the Feldberg area in the southern Black Forest, in the Alps and in the Swiss Jura , and it often occurs there in loose, individual stands; it occurs occasionally in the Vosges.

It thrives best on dry, nutrient-poor and somewhat acidic, humus-rich loam soils . It colonizes alpine meadows and pastures in Central Europe , even in locations with long snow cover; but it also goes into the laying pine bushes . It occurs in societies of the Nardion association, more rarely in those of the Salicion herbaceae association.

Particularly rich stocks can be found on extensively used pastures, because the seeds of the golden cinquefoil are spread through cattle droppings .

Medicinal plant

The gold cinquefoil is an ancient medicinal plant . The tea is used against diarrhea. In folk medicine it is still considered a safe remedy for diabetes , also as an antispasmodic for the gastrointestinal tract and for muscle cramps. As gargle for sore throats and bleeding gums and as a bath additive for poorly healing, infected wounds.

Mainly contains tannic acid , glycosides , tormentol , essential oils, gum , starch and resin .
