history

The catch magazine

The first place of activity of power wrestling maker Wolfgang Stach was the Catch magazine , which he co-edited for the first time in October 1990 , a German-language fanzine created for the fan group Catch Fans International (CFI) as a hobby and amateur . The magazine was compiled in A5 format using a b / w home copier and published with a red paper cover. After the publisher Wolfgang Stach split off from Catch magazine at the end of 1991 , Stach began working with WFA-NEWS and their editors Bernd Model and Uwe Fruth from 1992 onwards .

Model and Fruth had been able to gain a lot of experience with the publication of a wrestling insider magazine since 1987 as the founders of the first European wrestling fan club, the Wrestling Fan Association (WFA) and from 1989 as the publisher of the first European wrestling fanzine WFA-NEWS . The monthly WFA-NEWS were the undisputed German-speaking nonplusultra for wrestling fans all over Europe and in 1991 had around 450 subscribers. WFA members as well as WFA-NEWS readers and authors were among others. a. the RTL presenters "Der Bestrafer" Horst Brack and Joe Williams of the NWA / WCW TV show Catch Up , Carsten Schaefer , Tele 5 presenter of the WWF TV program Ring Frei! and the later power wrestling editor -in- chief Christian Bruns. WFA honorary members were u. a. the former WWF champions Ricky Steamboat and Ivan Putski , as well as the WWF / NWA women wrestling champions Alundra Blayze alias Madusa Miceli, Cora Combs and Debbie Combs .

The WFA founders Bernd Model and Uwe Fruth, as well as the WFA NEWS authors Kurt Gebs, Andreas Matlé and Michael Kunst were recognized within the manageable German-speaking fan scene as recognized and fan-close idealists who were best networked in the wrestling scene worldwide. People were skeptical about Catch-Magazin and the publisher Betty Frank, because in many respects the Catch-Magazin was viewed as a copy of the WFA-NEWS . From the spring of 1991 the WFA'ler had some fruitful conversations with CFI President and Catch Magazine co-editor Wolfgang Stach, and any differences could ultimately be overcome. As a result, Wolfgang Stach left Catch magazine at the end of 1991 and instead joined WFA-NEWS . Wolfgang Stach's commitment as a Europe expert at WFA-NEWS went hand in hand with a comprehensive reorientation of the previous publication mode . In addition, fanzines began to become more professional. Accordingly, had WFA NEWS already from issue 1/1992 a much more sophisticated layout and a higher print quality produced so far at the copy machine WFA NEWS . The last WFA-NEWS according to the old model appeared in December 1991.

The Wrestling Telegram

From January 1992 the WFA-NEWS was replaced by the newsletter Wrestling Telegram published by Bernd Model . Almost weekly, Model sent the two to six A4-page Wrestling Telegram to members or subscribers in an envelope, in order to receive more timely and up-to-date information about PPV events, fight reports and news from the top leagues at the time, WWF , WCW , ECW , SMW , NJPW , AJPW , FMW , CWA , UFC and the European Free Fight scene. The model for the Wrestling Telegram was u. a. the Wrestling Observer Newsletter published by Dave Meltzer . As part of an annual subscription to the Wrestling Telegram , the subscribers now also received the WFA NEWS developed and published by Wolfgang Stach every 2 months , which increasingly took on the character of a magazine. The first edition of the WFA-NEWS presented in a new guise from the house of Stachs Power Video Verlag was sent to Wrestling Telegram subscribers in February 1992 and contained detailed insider stories, PPV meetings, interviews and wrestler biographies, as these are in the current short messages, specialized wrestling telegrams fell short.

The response to the combination of the newsletter and the WFA-NEWS , which was detached from the day-to-day events, encouraged Wolfgang Stach to found a fully self-produced, professional, independent and German-language wrestling magazine after two more years. The publication Power-Wrestling was named after Stachs Power Video Verlag . The first power wrestling appeared in newsagents in February 1995. The wrestling magazine, produced using professional color printing, initially appeared every two months with only 36 pages. As the main publisher, publisher and editor-in-chief, Wolfgang Stach writes most of the magazine himself. The design of the magazine, online presence and radio show are supplemented by deputy editor-in-chief Christian Bruns and a handful of other editors. In 1998 a monthly publication was introduced due to the increasing sales figures. There were also changes to the layout and color scheme of the magazine. The number of pages in the magazine increased to the current 68 pages per issue. In December 1996 the last Wrestling Telegram was sent, which also meant the final end of the WFA. Only power wrestling "survived" the transition from fanzine to professional trade magazine.

In February 2015, for the 20th anniversary, the 223rd issue of the magazine appeared for the first time with a glossy cover. Power-Wrestling is Germany's oldest still published independent wrestling magazine and has been the only remaining German-language wrestling magazine since the local issue of WWE Action Magazine was discontinued in May 2014.

Through contacts with numerous prominent wrestlers such as the late Owen Hart and Ultimate Warrior , the magazine is characterized by authentic and background-oriented reporting.

Power Wrestling Awards

Since 2000, the annual elections under the title PW AWARDS have been held every 12 months in power wrestling . Every year, both the readers of the magazine and, since 2009, the web users, decide on the wrestler of the year. In addition, there are currently 14 other categories (including Wrestler of the Year, Newcomer, Best Pay-per-View ). The annual elections are generally considered to be the most important mood indicator for German-speaking wrestling fans.

Each participant can provide three details per category. In the evaluation, the one named in first place receives 10 points, the second named 6 points and the third named 4 points. This is how the most objective possible result is calculated.
