Iwate prefectural parliamentary election in 2011
The 2011 parliamentary election in the Japanese prefecture of Iwate was originally planned for the uniform regional elections on April 10, but was postponed as a result of the Tōhoku earthquake (in government institutions: Great East Japanese Earthquake). Like the postponed gubernatorial election in Iwate , it took place on September 11, 2011. At the same time, several local elections were also held.
Candidate nominations and campaigning
In the last elections in 2007 , the then opposition Democratic Party in Iwate became the country's strongest party in a prefectural parliament for the first time. Since 2009, when it took over the central government, it has suffered considerable losses in surveys. The 2011 election campaign, which officially began on September 2nd, was dominated by the effects of the earthquake and the reconstruction. A total of 72 candidates ran for the 48 seats in Parliament in Morioka, including 32 Democrats, 15 Liberal Democrats and ten Independents.
Result
In the constituencies of Shiwa and Kunohe, the deputies were elected without a vote due to the lack of opposing candidates. The turnout was 60.6%, almost nine points below the 2007 figure.
Although the Democratic Party was unable to achieve an absolute majority, it defended its status as the strongest party with 23 seats (including one of the “independent” candidates it supported). The Liberal Democratic Party won twelve seats. The third strongest force was the Chiiki Seito Iwate ("Regional Party Iwate") with four members.
