Promotion and publication

RTL announced a dating show for gays for the first time at the end of June 2019 and called for applications as a candidate. On October 2nd, it was announced that Prince Charming would be on TVNOW on October 30th. Prince Nicolas Puschmann was also named. Janine Jannes, TVNOW's communications manager, said Prince Charming was planned as a TVNOW original from the start. From October 21, TVNOW started a marketing campaign designed by BDA Creative with teaser videos in which terms such as dating, love and romance were described as gay (example sentence: “Dating is gay”). Thomas Huber, Marketing Director of Mediengruppe RTL Deutschland , explains this use of the word: "Unfortunately, the word 'gay' is still used in a derogatory way by some people - we want to change that and finally give the term back the positive meaning it deserves . "

From October 30th to December 18th, the eight regular episodes of the season and, following the finale, a reunion episode, moderated by Angela Finger-Erben , were published in the premium area of TVNOW . On Black Friday , November 29th, which TVNOW called “Black FriGay”, the first five episodes that had been released up to then could be seen for free. To publish the finale, Mediengruppe RTL announced that the program will be broadcast on VOX in spring 2020 . After the announcement of the Grimmepreis award on March 3, Mediengruppe RTL announced the date for the free TV premiere: The first season could be seen on Mondays at 10:15 p.m. from April 20, 2020.

With the Black FriGay event, the extension for a second season was announced. On January 31, 2020, the production company Seapoint called for applications as a candidate for the second season. The second season should initially be shot from the end of April 2020 for a release on TVNOW in July, which was not possible due to the COVID-19 pandemic . Seapoint plans to start production in August, with release scheduled for the end of September. On August 4th, the 29-year-old marketing manager Alexander Schäfer from Frankfurt am Main was announced as the new Prince. The episodes of the second season should be broadcast on VOX shortly after the first publication on TVNOW in autumn.

reception

Reviews and feedback

Prince Charming was received positively in the criticism and as better compared to Bachelor formats. Thus Nicolas by Anja Rützel referred to Spiegel Online as the better bachelor. Janna Specken for T-online.de offers five reasons why Prince Charming is better than the Bachelor ; for her, Nicolas is the coolest Bachelor and she finds the candidates dazzlingly different and very entertaining. In Neon is judged the show was worth more than the bachelor and is the best dating format of all time. Alexander Krei from DWDL.de thinks the concept feels familiar and that is a good thing. The first gay dating show is ultimately nothing more than a dating show. “You can find it all terribly banal and predictable - or just get involved and have fun with the show. It also arises because the "Bachelor" -experienced makers of "Prince Charming" fortunately refrained from portraying the love between two men as something extraordinary. " Focus Online editor Tobias Suchanek explicitly writes as a straight man that this is for him Broadcast more than just entertainment, but almost like a documentary, because he is presented with a social scene with which he otherwise has nothing to do in life, and thus his horizons are broadened. For the gay and lesbian internet magazine queer.de , the show is surprisingly entertaining and perfect for binge watching on cold winter days; The selection of the prince and the candidates in particular receive praise.

In interviews, Puschmann reports positive feedback from viewers about the outing stories of the participants and about the fact that he lives out being gay in a normal way and shows how people dared to come out in their environment because of the show , or changed their negative attitude towards homosexuality to have.

Award

On January 16, 2020, it was announced that Prince Charming has been nominated for the 2020 Grimme Prize in the entertainment category; and on March 3, that the show was awarded next to Chez Krömer and Joko & Klaas Live - 15 minutes . It is the first dating show to receive a Grimme Prize. Prince Nicolas Puschmann, producer Nina Klink and executive producers Nora Kauven and Jan Grafe zu Baringdorf will be honored. The jury of experts justified their decision in favor of "Prince Charming" with the words: "Thanks to the impartiality that a format can only have in its debut season, unexpected moments of real feelings and real solidarity break through in 'Prince Charming'. " The show is "not only great, emotional television entertainment", but "also a new kind of fairy tale". Henning Tewes, co-managing director of the RTL streaming portal TVNOW, described the award as a "great accolade". It shows "that it was high time for the first gay dating show in Germany". Show producer Nina Klink was delighted that the show was allowed to "ensure more diversity in German entertainment".

On June 4th, 2020 it was announced that Prince Charming has been nominated for the German Television Award 2020 in the category "Best Entertainment Reality".
