Procopius of Templin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Prokop von Templin , also Procopius von Templin (* 1609 in Templin / Uckermark, † November 22, 1680 in Linz / Upper Austria ) was a writer and sacred song poet of the Baroque period.

Life

Coming from a Protestant family, the young orphaned shy boy was deported to Bohemia by imperial recruiters at the age of sixteen and was never to see his homeland again. Apparently under the impression of these experiences Prokop joined the Capuchin Order in Vienna in 1627 . In the service of the order he went a. a. to Mariazell (Styria) and the Mariahilf Monastery in Passau . In 1662 he witnessed the great earthquake in Passau that seriously damaged the city and monastery. He retired with the Capuchins of Linz , where he died at the age of 72. His large anthologies of sermons for the entire church year as well as Marian songs were mostly published in Salzburg.

Due to the popularity and theological foundation of his sermons and poems, he is considered the forerunner of Abraham a Sancta Claras . His German is considered to be the linguistically best of the 17th century.
