Quartu Sant'Elena ( Sardinian : Cuartu Sant'Alèni ) is an Italian municipality with 70,352 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the metropolitan city of Cagliari .
geography
Quartu Sant'Elena is located east of Cagliari and is only separated from the sea (Golfo dei Angeli) by the salt pans di Stato. The place borders directly on the regional park Stagno di Molentargius .
In the 1970s, Quartu Sant'Elena was still physically separated from Cagliari. But as early as the 1990s, both cities grew together due to the growing population and growing industry. Other neighboring communities are Maracalagonis , Monserrato , Quartucciu and Selargius . The district of Flumini di Quartu also belongs to the municipality.
history
The name of the city is derived from the distance to Cagliari ( Quartum miles , Latin for "four miles") as well as from the passage there of the mother of Emperor Constantine , Helena (Italian: Santa Elena), from ("Four miles to Santa Elena" ).
The first traces of human existence in Quartu Sant'Elena date from the time of the Phoenicians, as evidenced by the findings of Cepola, Geremeas, Is Mortorius and Separassiu. Roman traces can be found near the Villa Sant'Andrea, a cemetery at S. Martino and some gravestones at Simbirizzi.
During the reign of the Kingdom of Aragon , Quartu Sant'Elena was ravaged by fever, plague, malaria and ongoing raids by Saracen pirates, a decline that spread to all of Sardinia at the time.
In 1793, soldiers from the French fleet landed on the coast of Quartu with the intention of subjugating the whole island. The citizens of the city attacked the French under the leadership of Antonio Pisanu and thwarted the conquest in a bloody battle.
In 1956 Quartu Sant'Elena was granted city rights by Giovanni Gronchi , President of the Republic of Italy.
