Highlander - The Source of Immortality (Original: Highlander - The Source ) was released on September 15, 2007 on the SciFi-Channel and is the fifth part of the following series of films based on the film Highlander - There can only be one, but the way into Cinema failed. According to the manufacturer, “The Source” will be the first part of a planned trilogy. Their production has so far hardly got beyond the announcement. The film was released on DVD on May 8, 2008 in Germany.

Like the previous films, "The Source" ignores a number of details from the other productions and thus breaks the continuity of the story. The film roughly builds on the events depicted in the first feature film and the Highlander TV series .

people

  • Duncan MacLeod, a Scottish clansman widely related to the famous Connor MacLeod. Duncan was already the protagonist in the film "Endgame" and in the TV series.
  • Anna Teshemka, Duncan's wife
  • Joe Dawson, a pub host and musician who has long been Duncan's best friend
  • Methos, with an age of more than 5000 years, the oldest known immortal
  • Zai Jie, an immortal
  • Reggie, an immortal who knows his way around information technology
  • Cardinal Giovanni, also an immortal, but at the same time a “modern” devout Christian who uses the latest information technology and prefers a fashion style like from the film “ Matrix
  • The "guardian", an immortal from prehistoric times, who is subject to an extremely slow decline and therefore now looks more like a zombie than a human. His extreme, supernatural speed makes him superior to all other immortals in battle.
  • The "oldest", a physically degenerated immortal from primeval times. In contrast to his former companion, he can hardly move.

action

The film takes place a few years in the future. Information technology has developed significantly, but society seems to be rapidly approaching decline - at least at the scene of events in Lithuania .

Duncan is drifting around aimlessly. However, some other immortals have decided to look for the "source" of immortality. Zai Jie has come the furthest so far. He penetrates a television tower and informs his companions from there, but the connection is so bad that he can only transmit part of his knowledge before the "guardian of the source" attacks him and beheads him. The side effects of the "animation" are so strong that the tower is completely destroyed.

Reggie has now found out that the planets will take a very special constellation in a short time and will then all be arranged in a line ( conjunction ). This constellation also has a special meaning in astrology and indicates that something very extraordinary is about to happen.

Former "observer" Joe Dawson is asked by Methos to look for Duncan. Dawson finds Duncan, who came across the Guardian immediately after Zai Jie's death and is fighting him. The guard withdraws from the fight. Duncan wants to continue the fight, although he has no chance against the guard, who is equipped with supernatural speed. He is prevented from doing so by Dawson with a pistol shot fired at him. Dawson brings Duncan to the others in a monastery, where a meeting with the "elder" takes place. Anna also appears here, who was led by visions.

The "elder" comes from the same prehistoric times as the guardian and reports that even then immortals fought against each other and searched for the "source". The last two defeated the previous guardian and were cursed. One of the two became the new guardian. The eldest can no longer do anything himself and recommends following Anna and sticking to her visions. He warns that the immortals will lose more and more of their powers the closer they get to the source.

In the meantime, Reggie and Dawson roam the monastery grounds. The guardian breaks the law of the immortals never to fight on holy ground. He attacks them both in turn and defeats them without difficulty. Duncan comes in. In an effort to save Dawson, he throws his katana at the guard and pierces the guard's throat. But the opponent is not seriously injured. He pulls out the weapon, breaks it, and kills Dawson with the rest of the blade. Then he moves away. Duncan is horrified to find that the Immortals' ability to sense their own kind and thus be warned of any approach has failed the Guardian. Joe is buried, and those who remain make their way to an island, where Reggie has located the location of the "source" based on the information so far.

The captain of the ship going to the island warns his passengers: There are only mad cannibalists around. In fact, as soon as he arrives at an abandoned dock, a bloody battle breaks out because Duncan refuses to allow members of a thugs to burn a prisoner just for fun. The group takes a van and drives to an abandoned house near the "spring".

During the night, Reggie is attacked again by the guard and defeated. Duncan replaces his destroyed weapon with two Chinese butterfly swords . The companions take Reggie's body with them and discover in horror in the morning that the resuscitation does not take place. The immortals have become mortal and are no longer almost invincible opponents for the madmen who roam the area.

Reggie is buried and the journey continues. A little later, the group is ambushed and put out of action by poisoned crossbow bolts.

The cannibalistic feast is supposed to take place during the night, but the guard frees Anna and forces her to accompany him to the "source". A little later Giovanni is lucky. The celebrants do not watch over the many bonfires. A runaway flame burns one of Giovanni's chains and he is able to break free. Instead of helping the others, he takes a sword and goes to the source alone, believing that God has chosen him to be "the one". The fire continues, and finally Duncan is released, who then loosens Methos. The two follow Giovanni and reach him when the cardinal is being surrounded and attacked by some locals. Duncan saves the beleaguered, but Methos holds back and only intervenes at the last moment to prevent Duncan's death, while Giovanni is already hurrying on. Methos believes that Duncan is the chosen one because of his time and again proven integrity. He tells his friend that, takes a horse and lures the rest of the pursuers behind him, while Duncan makes his way back to the source safely.

Giovanni thinks he is close to his goal when the guard arrives. He is so surprised at the sudden end of his path that he lets himself be beheaded without resistance. The otherwise usual “revitalization” after the final death of an immortal does not occur here either.

A showdown takes place in a banal sand pit in the middle of the woods : the planets are now arranged in a line and can be seen as large as if they were barely further away than the moon. Supernatural luminous phenomena bathe Anna in a radiant light. The Guardian puts Duncan to fight and he accepts that he has not only regained his strength, but is apparently just as supernaturally fast and strong as the Guardian. Duncan wins the fight and the guard tells him to take his head. But Duncan refuses. That is apparently the right decision, because the guard dissolves in a cascade of light with a roar and complains that he is cursed forever.

Anna has now penetrated deeper and deeper into the light. Duncan follows her. When the two are together, she realizes: "I feel life, I feel our child." Duncan states: "He is the one."

production

In 2001 the producers of the previous film "Endgame" started planning a fifth film and discussing this idea with fans. Filming began in Lithuania in 2005. The Lionsgate company initially planned to release the film in 2006. This date has been postponed several times. A "Russian version" came on the market in Russia and was quickly distributed illegally. The reviews were partly devastating, and the film was re-produced, but ultimately did not create the impression that it could be a box office success. Lionsgate eventually released The Source as a television movie.

There are still versions in other languages, including a German one.

Reviews

The audience's reactions range from restrained to devastating. Since the film did not hit theaters, it has been largely ignored by professional critics.
