The Río Ayopaya is the upper reaches of the Río Cotacajes and flows on the eastern slopes of the Andean Cordillera in the South American state of Bolivia .

The Río Ayopaya forms on the eastern edge of the Serranía de Sicasica from the union of the Río Leque with the Río Colquiri at an altitude of 2329  m . The river flows north from its formation and joins after 40 kilometers with the Río Ichoca-Colquiri to the Río Sacambaya . On the entire route, the Río Ayopaya forms the border between the Departamento Cochabamba and the Departamento La Paz .

The north adjoining Río Sacambaya joins the Río Negro to the Río Cotacajes after 37 kilometers , which in turn merges with the Río Santa Elena after another 125 kilometers and bears the name Río Alto Beni downstream .
