The Río Pucará is an approximately 233 km long right tributary of the Río Ramis in the South American Andean highlands (northern Altiplano ) of the Peruvian region of Puno .

River course

The Río Pucará rises on the southwest flank of the 5489  m high Nevado Chimbolla , highest point of the Cordillera La Raya mountain range , at an altitude of about 4900  m . The Río Vilcanota , the upper reaches of the Río Urubamba , has its origin on the northwest flank of the same mountain. The Río Pucará bears the name Río Santa Rosa for its first 100 kilometers , then the name Río Ayaviri on an approximately 20 km long section of the river . The Río Pucará flows through the provinces of Melgar , Azángaro and Lampa in a predominantly southeastern direction. Almost along its entire course of the river it shows a sometimes strongly meandering behavior with numerous river bends and (dried out) oxbow lakes. This is apparently due to the fact that the river has a very slight gradient apart from the first 50 kilometers. At river kilometer 200 the Río Pucará flows south past the small town of Santa Rosa . At river kilometer 154 the Río Macari meets the river on the right. At river kilometer 130 the Río Pucará flows south past the provincial capital Ayaviri . The village of Tirapata lies on the left bank of the river at 90 km . At river km 70 he passes the small towns Estación Pucará (on the left bank) and Pucará (on the right bank). 10 kilometers above the mouth, the river passes the village of Calapuja on the right bank . The Río Pucará finally flows into the Río Ramis opposite the village of Achaya , 20 km north of the city of Juliaca , 66 km above its mouth into Lake Titicaca .

Hydrology

The Río Pucará drains an area of around 5400 km² in the west of the Puno region. In the catchment area of the river are only a few glaciated mountains. As with all rivers in the region, a large part of the annual runoff occurs in the first quarter, during which floods usually occur. The rest of the year the river has very little water.
