history

In 1939 broadcasts began on shortwave . Programs in German were first broadcast from Cairo under British control during World War II .

After the proclamation of the Republic of Egypt in 1953, the overseas service was built up: under Gamal Abdel Nasser, with its Arab-socialist orientation, the country was keen to open up and gain broad visibility; there were occasional broadcasts in up to 35 languages. The overseas service has also been broadcasting in German since 1958.

In 1966 the then head of the overseas service Ali Rushdy founded the Arabic by radio language course series in English and French; Turkish, Urdu, Swahili, Hausa, Indonesian, Albanian, Persian and Pashto followed. The language course comprises three levels of 51 units each with a duration of 15 minutes.

In 2011, listeners in Germany stated that the editorial staff would continue to work largely undisturbed during the upheavals caused by the Arab Spring . The programs are surprisingly neutral and sometimes sounded a bit amateurish and chaotic. This was attributed to the situation in the country and the programs were perceived as "very authentic".
