The cycling track at the horse tower was the first cycling track built in the (today's) state capital Hanover . The location of the sports facility , initially built exclusively for cycling races in the 19th century and operated until the 1950s, was between the municipal slaughterhouse in the Bult district and the horse tower in the Kleefeld district .

The cyclist racing club founded especially for this purpose had campaigned for the construction of Hanover's first cycling track, until an initially simple cinder track on urban leased land at the horse tower was inaugurated in 1888. Only a few years later, the racing surface was replaced by asphalt in 1895 .

From 1897 the Hanover Grand Prix was held on this track until the 1950s.

In 1903 a more extensive renovation of the entire facility was carried out: the racetrack, with its now reinforced and higher curves, was lengthened to 500 meters, and a 400-meter long track was added to the interior as an athletics facility . With a newly built standing grandstand , the facility was designed for 10,000 spectators.

In the 1920s of the Weimar Republic and - after the period of National Socialism and the Second World War - the bicycle racing track at the Pferdeturm was also used to host motorcycle and car races in the first post-war years . In addition, the Hannover 96 football club used the facility for its home games until 1958 . A few years earlier, however, racing had been officially banned from 1955 due to construction defects in the facility, which was now half a century old. It was completely demolished by 1960.

The Hanover-Wülfel cycle race track, which opened in May 1965, was replaced five years later for the horse racing track at the Pferdeturm .
