Rainer G. Schmidt

Rainer G. Schmidt ( pseudonym : Ranuit ; born April 6, 1950 in Riegelsberg ( Saarland ) as Rainer Carl Gustav Schmidt ) is a German translator and poet .

Life

Rainer G. Schmidt attended high school in Saarbrücken . From 1968 he studied art history , philosophy , German and sociology at the universities of Saarbrücken and Marburg . He graduated with the first state examination. Schmidt has lived in Berlin as a freelance writer and translator since 1976 .

Schmidt published his first literary texts as a schoolboy. A selection of his poems was published in 2000 under the title “The Snow Fall”. Since the 1970s , when he began to translate Arthur Rimbaud's complete works into German with Hans Therre, the focus of Schmidt's work has been on the translation of prose texts and poems from English and French.

Awards

In addition to numerous scholarships, including from the German Translation Fund and the German Literature Fund, Rainer G. Schmidt received the Paul Celan Prize in 1998 for his translation of Herman Melville's novel “Mardi and a journey there” . In 2015 he was awarded the Paul Scheerbart Prize for his translation of “Selected Poems” by Wallace Stevens .
