The German Amateur Chess Championship (from 2001 to 2006 Ramada-Treff Cup , from 2006 to 2017 Ramada Cup ) is a chess tournament of the German Chess Federation (DSB) for players with a rating below 2300. The championship was initially held in five groups and consisted of five preliminary tournaments and a final, for which the five best players in each group and every preliminary tournament qualified. In 2006 the number of pre-tournaments, groups and qualifiers per group was increased to six, in 2017 to seven. Since 2014, the best female participants in the groups have also qualified for the finals.

The group classification is based on the tournament rating (TWZ) - either the German rating (DWZ) or the Elo rating . The higher number was used until 2017, and since 2017 participants have been able to choose whether they are classified according to DWZ or ELO.

The qualifying tournaments and the final are organized in different cities. Hundreds of participants come together for several days in each tournament; from 2001/02 to 2005/06 the total number of participants rose from 1396 to 1673; In 2011/12, 1916 players took part.

history

The Ramada Hotels logo

The tournament series was launched in 2001 on the occasion of the 125th birthday of the German Chess Federation by Dirk Jordan. The hotel chain Ramada (later H-Hotels ) was won as a sponsor . Among other things, this provides a large part of the prizes in the form of hotel vouchers. The tournament was initially called the RAMADA-TREFF Cup , later just the RAMADA Cup . After the Ramada brand was discontinued, the nickname was dropped in 2017, but H-Hotels initially remained a sponsor.

In 2018 there was a break in the chess union with Dirk Jordan, who was accused of unauthorized side agreements with the hotels involved. Jordan would have agreed with the hotels that they donate a portion of the overnight income to clubs that use it to buy from companies belonging to the Jordan family. This also ended the collaboration with the H-Hotels hotel chain. In September 2018 it was announced that the tournament series will be continued by a new organization team in other hotels.
